Summer Trends: how to work denim (with help from 7 For All Mankind!)

28 May, 2013

Denim is something you can never have enough of! It’s the perfect fabric for all year round – simply switch up your styling to make it match any given activity or event. Gone are the days when there was only a standard dark wash skinny to don; now you can choose from any shade of the rainbow in a heap of cuts, textures and prints… and denim diehards can even rock the double denim look too!

We stopped by 7 For All Mankind to take a peek at what they have in store for the season – and for some inspiration for how to rock our denim summer looks!

DENIM ON DENIM

For a few seasons now, denim on denim has been the in thing. Once a style no-no, it’s now an easy fashion yes! The trick is to vary your shades so you don’t end up looking like a walking spool of fabric!

Here, we try this boyfriend skinny and pair it with a darker jacket worn cape-style. This allows you to stay cool when outdoors, but still be ready to battle those fierce air cons inside! The cream shirt is layered with a beaded jacket in the same hue to add texture and a touch of shine (a simple way to incorporate the daytime sequins trend). Mixing the bedazzled pieces with something as comfortable as worn denim balances the look and keeps you from looking like you’ve been out all night and are still rocking your club wear – sequins should be worn in moderation for the daytime, ladies!

Clockwise, left to right: John Hardy ring, MANGO denim shirt, Rag & Bone Trilby Hat, Saint Laurent Petit Cabas Classique Bag, SAMBAG Heidi sandals, 7FAM White Denim Christen Jeans, Jennifer Meyer Heart Ring, H&M bracelet, BCBGMAXAZRIA woven cuff, NARS Orgasm Blush

Another super easy way to wear the denim-on-denim trend is to pair a basic denim shirt with white jeans. Perfect for a day spent at the country club or brunching with the girls, this look will keep you comfy and cute all day long! We paired these 7FAM jeans with a Mango top and Sambag shoes; top it off with a trilby from Rag & Bone and you are good to go have a beachy keen day.

COLOURED DENIM

By now, you all surely must own a pair of coloured jeans. No matter your shape or size, there is a shade out there to flatter – even my mom has embraced the trend and was sporting some royal blue jeans last time we Skyped!

While darker colours may be the more obviously flattering shades, I was surprised to find how easy-to-wear these chartreuse ones were! I paired them with this emerald blouse, also from 7FAM, to dress them up a bit and make them more Central-strolling appropriate (after all, you never know who you’ll end up bumping into!).

This allows us to try the colour-blocking trend too! Remember that your eye will automatically go to whatever shade is the lightest so if you are bigger on bottom, wear a light top or vice versa. I added a neutral high heel to lengthen my legs – I figured that if you were drawn to the bright pants, I might as well make you think that my legs are longer too!

Clockwise, left to right: Zara necklace, Zara top, Karen Walker Orbit sunglasses, Tom Ford Vapour nail lacquer, Kate Spade watch, Charlotte Olympia flats, 7FAM Christen Skinny Jeans, Harper’s Bazaar magazine, 3.1 Philip Lim bag

Here is another option for a coloured jean – mint is the shade of the season and is popping up everywhere! When paired with a laser-cut faux leather top from Zara, this look is right on trend. These kitten flats from Charlotte Olympia keep it cute while the Phillip Lim bag brings a bit of super-chic urbanite to the look. I am in love with this pairing and would wear this all season long!

PATTERNED DENIM

Jeans can be a night staple too but try breaking away from the dark denim rut. This lace variety propels you fashion-forward and shows that you are willing to take a chance!

To drive this point home, we added a sequin t-shirt perfect for dancing till dawn, whilst a simple silk and Swarovski necklace by Lionette (sold at Polkadot Boutique) adds another layer of shine.

Clockwise, left to right: DANNIJO Siobhan Earrings, ASOS top, Saint Laurent Arty ring, Accessorize Digi Gem Clutch, Rupert Sanderson Birdie Heels, 7FAM The Skinny in Etched Floral, Camera iPhone cover, NARS Penny Lane lip gloss

To really make a style statement, pair this floral beaded top from ASOS with these 7FAM toile tux-striped jeans. The Rupert Sanderson pump elevates the look and adds a pop of feathery fun! Pile on the glam with this clutch from Accessorize and this YSL ring from Net-A-Porter. This outfit is only for the brave as every eye will be instantly on you; I can see this as the perfect look for any fashion-based event where the glitterati will be showing up in show-stopping creations. Party pages of Tatler, here we come!
