Silence of the Lambs, 1991
Our Managing Editor, Stef’s pick proves she knows her horror movies! Did you know Anthony Hopkins only appears for 16 minutes throughout the 2-hour movie? Yet he won Best Actor at the Oscars and his character, Hannibal Lecter has left a legacy in the horror genre. Hannibal is a psychiatrist turned psychotic serial killer with a taste for human meat, but he just might be the answer in catching another notorious killer, Buffalo Bill, whose crimes are just as heinous.

The Ring, 2002
A classic when it comes to jump scares, and you know exactly what to picture when we mention The Ring! You may think you can handle horror, but that’s until Samara comes crawling out of a TV screen! Based on the Japanese horror of the same name (we dare you to watch this one for more scares), journalist Rachel investigates a mysterious tape which seems to cause the death of anyone one week to the day after they view it before the same fate comes for her…

Get Out, 2017
I am a long-time Jordan Peele fan and I’ve watched Get Out four times and I get creeped out every time! Daniel Kaluuya plays Chris who’s nervous about visiting his Caucasian girlfriend’s parents for the first time. The eerie setting definitely tells us something is off but it’s not until much later in the movie you understand what’s really going on, and trust us, it’ll catch you off guard!

The Substance, 2024
Stef stepped out of the cinema both laughing and thoroughly disgusted while processing the shock of the two-hour-long movie. While ridiculously gory and over-the-top even for a body horror movie, The Substance provides shameless entertainment and escapism, and Demi Moore is great as an ageing Hollywood star seeking to reclaim her youth.

Child’s Play, 1988
While Child’s Play gave some an immortal fear of dolls (like myself), others have become long-term fans (like our Multi-Media Designer, Grace who has a life-size Chucky at home!). The supernatural slasher film is violent, to say the least – a dying serial killer transfers his consciousness into a popular kids’ doll using voodoo which falls into the hands of a six-year-old boy as a birthday present. If you’re an avid fan, do check out the 2021 horror comedy series.

The Shining, 1980
Here’s Johnny! Stanley Kubrick’s cult classic based on Stephen King’s novel is iconic to say the least, while The Shining is known for the notorious twins and Jack Nicholson tearing down the washroom door with an axe, we’ve been scarred by the bathtub scene (just a slight spoiler!). Anyhoo, nothing good ever came of moving your family to a remote zone…

The Exorcist, 1973
A horror movie that’s garnered fans across generations, The Exorcist is not for the faint-hearted. Based on an actual exorcism of a young boy, many believe this movie to be cursed given the number of accidents (and even deaths) during its filming. While the plot is, as you can guess, about an exorcism, the make-up, effects and graphic details make this one of the scariest movies ever made.

Psycho, 1960
Infamous for the shower scene that’s horrific even in black and white, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho’s earned an all-time spot in the list of favourite horror movies. Motel owner Norman Bates woos us with his charm but the evil underneath is layered, leaving us with a chilling ending scene.

Hereditary, 2018
A lesser-known horror movie recommendation, Hereditary follows the Grahams being haunted by sinister activities after the passing of their family member. The truth unveils the family’s unorthodox ancestry, which explains disturbing accidents. The movie is full of strong emotions (lots of screaming from lead Toni Collette!) and an overall dark and sinister theme involving burnt bodies, severed heads and maggots.
