OIL – Shenzhen’s Go-To Spot For Electronic Music

If you ask anyone in the regional music scene where to go in Shenzhen, OIL is always the first answer. Hidden away in a Chegongmiao basement, this place is essentially the anchor of China’s underground club circuit. It’s got a massive Funktion-One sound system, a dark, stripped-back setup and a lineup that routinely brings in solid international DJs alongside local selectors playing everything from heavy techno to bass.

Sassy Tip: Check OIL’s Instagram before you go — it occasionally runs daytime workshops or ambient sound sessions before the main night kicks off.

Sauce – Bass, UK Garage & Hip-Hop Nightclub

If you prefer high-tempo sets and a younger crowd, Sauce is a solid option. Situated in Futian, it caters heavily to the city’s hip-hop, trap and garage crowds. The space feels like a cross between a warehouse and a cyberpunk set, complete with intense LED displays and heavy subwoofers. Expect a stylish, streetwear-heavy crowd that stays out well past 2am.

Roots House – Live Jazz & Vinyl In OCT-LOFT

Tucked into the OCT-LOFT creative compound, Roots House is a great refuge if you’re not in the mood for heavy electronic beats. Part live jazz venue, part vinyl lounge, it’s one of the cooler audiophile spots in town. On any given evening, you might catch a local jazz trio, a soul session or a guest DJ digging through crates of funk and Afrobeat vinyl. The sound treatment in the room is fantastic, making it a comfortable spot to sit back with a Negroni or a glass of wine.

Sassy Tip: OCT-LOFT is packed with galleries and coffee shops, so head over early to wander around before the music starts.
