Your Gynaecological Questions Answered

What To Expect At Your First Gynaecology Appointment

Your first appointment will usually start with a chat about your medical history, menstrual cycle and any concerns. Depending on your symptoms, your gynaecologist might recommend a pelvic examination, Pap smear, ultrasound or blood tests. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the tests, costs or anything that makes you uncomfortable.

How Often Should You Have A Pap Smear In Hong Kong?

You might be surprised to learn that you don’t necessarily need an annual Pap smear! According to Hong Kong’s Department of Health, women aged 25 to 64 who have ever had sexual experience should undergo regular cervical screening.

For Pap smears (cervical cytology), the recommendation is two annual tests, followed by screening every three years if both results are normal. Women aged 30 to 64 can also choose HPV testing, or combined HPV and Pap testing, every five years.

Private gynaecologists in Hong Kong follow the same general screening guidance. However, your doctor may recommend more frequent testing based on your medical history or previous results.

Sassy Tip: A Pap smear isn’t the same as a full gynaecological check-up. If you’re experiencing unusual bleeding, pelvic pain or other symptoms, don’t wait for your next screening appointment.

What’s The Difference Between A Gynaecologist And An OBGYN?

It’s worth knowing that gynaecology and obstetrics aren’t quite the same thing. Gynaecologists look after reproductive health at every life stage, while obstetricians focus on pregnancy and childbirth. Many Hong Kong specialists offer both services, so check that you’re booking the right consultation.

Can A Gynaecologist Check Your Fertility?

Yes! Whether you’re planning a pregnancy soon, thinking about your options for the future or having trouble conceiving, a gynaecologist is a good place to start. Depending on your circumstances, your doctor may recommend hormone blood tests, an ultrasound or further investigations to check for conditions affecting fertility.

How Much Does A Gynaecologist Cost In Hong Kong?

Private gynaecology consultations vary considerably. First-appointment fees start around $1,000 although many clinics will charge more. Ultrasounds, Pap smears, blood tests and medication may cost extra, so always ask what’s included before booking.

Public hospitals are more affordable for eligible patients. The Hospital Authority charges $250 per specialist outpatient appointment, with additional charges for certain tests and medication.

Just need a Pap smear? Government Maternal and Child Health Centres offer cervical screening for $100 to eligible patients. This service doesn’t include a full gynaecological examination.

Do You Need A Referral To See A Gynaecologist In Hong Kong?

You can book directly with most private gynaecologists in Hong Kong, without a referral from your GP. However, if you’re using private health insurance it may be required to process your claim (ALWAYS read the fine print).

For public hospital specialist outpatient clinics, you’ll generally need a referral letter from a Hong Kong-registered doctor, issued within the previous three months. The Hospital Authority assesses referrals according to medical urgency, so waiting times can vary significantly. You can submit your referral through the HA Go app or arrange an appointment through the relevant hospital clinic.

For routine cervical screening at a government Maternal and Child Health Centre, you don’t need a specialist referral. Simply call the booking hotline on 3166 6631.
