Combat climate change and poverty, locally and globally, with Oxfam Unwrapped…

We like to spoil our friends and family over the holidays, but does your sister really need another bracelet to add to her jewellery collection, and haven’t you and your SO been on enough staycations this year? Why not give them something a little more meaningful this Christmas? Thanks to Oxfam Unwrapped you can surprise your loved ones with a gift that gives back.

Christmas is a time of giving after all, and wouldn’t it be nice if this could extend beyond the people in our lives to those in the wider community who are in need? We’re talking about the street cleaners who work tirelessly to keep our beloved city clean, low-income families struggling to make ends meet and those who have limited access to food and water.

Many communities in Hong Kong and beyond are struggling to cope with the devastating global effects of climate change and the pandemic, and it’s really the world’s poorest communities who are bearing the brunt of these impacts. To help counter this, Oxfam is once again bringing you Oxfam Unwrapped this holiday season, featuring a range of gifts that give back, including new options created specifically to aid those affected by climate change.

Oxfam Unwrapped: Climate Justice

Want to start local? Buying the Climate Justice gift helps Hong Kong’s street cleaners, who work under difficult conditions all year round, and supports Oxfam’s research and advocacy efforts to fight for policies to ensure better working conditions in the face of extreme weather events. In fact, they’ve been making headway in this area after talks with the Labour Department based on the NGO’s latest study. The Department is now considering stepping up inspections during very hot weather to ensure acceptable working conditions. But more needs to be done!

Another gift to consider is the Water ATM, which makes water available 24 hours a day, giving people living in arid areas access to drinking water with just a tap of a token onto an electronic reader. To help those living in areas affected by drought, the Super Seeds gift provides packets of seeds, as well as training about seed conservation and breeding to farmers who rely on crops to make a living.

Why think twice about what to give your loved ones this Christmas? Trust us, knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life, no matter how small, brings a kind of joy that no stocking stuffer ever could.

Can’t decide on a specific gift? How about instead of spending on Secret Santa gifts this year, you and your friends pool your gift money together to make a donation? As a token of appreciation, Oxfam will send donors a card (or e-card) telling them how their gift is helping to fight poverty. Remember, every dollar counts!
