Sassy Style Dilemma: Stripes

19 January, 2015
Style Dilemma: I’ve always been scared of stripes believing that they’re unflattering in every possible way, but the other day I read that the rumours are false. I’ve steered clear from these tricky lines all my life and now want to see what all the fuss is about. Are stripes actually flattering and are you sure they won’t make my body look like a double decker bus?Style Solution: Another fashion old wives’ tale gone awry! Stripes can indeed be flattering, and their preppy chic aesthetic will polish up an otherwise mundane outfit. The trick is to leave things loose – any print worn skin tight can cause an optical illusion. Sticking to classic colors – blue, black, white and red – can make mixing and matching a cinch.

Stripes are very dynamic, and not allowing the eye to rest on any one area makes objects appear smaller than they are. This can be especially helpful on the bottom, a zone that causes most women unease. Try this Thakoon Addition skirt (1), with a smart central offset panel, or, Tibi’s relaxed fit trousers (2), featuring flattering contrast knee details.

He Said / She Said
Stripes, particularly pinstripes, have a cool menswear vibe, and blending them with a feminine silhouette, such as a dress, can be quite fun – just keep the accessories simple and modern for head-to-toe cohesiveness. Thakoon’s take (3) is pre-styled all on its own, but also fit for layering – even over jeans. Sport this Band of Outsiders Breton stripe shirt dress (4)- it is work ready with a no-fail blazer, plus you can ditch the office attire and add statement earrings and booties for an evening out .

Big & Bold
Thicker lines are graphic and gorgeous. An oversized sweater (5) with even more oversize stripes from MM6 Maison Martin Margiela (a line to watch right now) pairs effortlessly with a classic wool kilt-style wrap skirt from REDValentino (6) – a dash of 90s grunge chic defines this combo when worn together. Apart, they are easy everyday staples, begging for solid black.
