Marc Jacobs’ Spring/Summer collection for Louis Vuitton featured some really out-there bag designs. With a 21st-century intrepid-traveller/African desert-warrior feel, pieces were adorned with tassels, tags, beads and even fluorescent fox tails, and shapes included bum bags (or fanny packs as Americans amusingly, to Brits, call them), duffel bags and back packs. Visually exciting, daring and certainly something new for the LV brand, the question remains as to whether these bags would really appeal to the normal customer likely to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag. After all, these bags aren’t pretty, especially the duffel bags, which are something I would associate more with toting laundry, or a sleeping bag even.
Rihanna has already got her hands on one of the fanny pack designs, and of course, wears it well, but these aren’t the kind of bags I can see being really keepers over time – In my opinion they’re a little too “novelty” and kooky to have more than one-season appeal. The two items that I do find most desirable are the little crab-claw clutch in the top image, which I think is super-cute, and the bag that looks like an aeroplane carry-on in the second image from the top. Both of these I can imagine really working with a minimal summer outfit to take on summer holiday.
