We tried out a sensory journey of yoga and sound. Here’s how we got on…

District: Sheung Wan
How much: $150 per person for a one-hour class. BYO mat (they have a few spare if needed). Sign up here
Best for: Anyone that loves music and is looking for a unique yoga experience

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to yoga studios in Hong Kong, with classes offering everything from hatha to hot yoga, yogalates to antigravity yoga. With our jam-packed schedules, yoga is a great way to find some calm in this crazy city. So when we heard there was a new experience combining live music and yoga (and promising to leave us feeling truly regenerated) we had to give it a try!

Teacher Sophia Greengrass has teamed up with DJs RomainFX (Founder of Fauve Radio, Wonderfruit, Sonar, Clockenflap, Shi Fu Miz) and Sunsiare (Music Director of Mihn Club, Boiler Room, Sonar, Savage-Hanoi, Clockenflap), to offer intimate DJ Yoga classes that combine yoga and music to create a sensory stimulation. The classes are held at 宀 Club (Mihn Club) in Sheung Wan and although an unlikely venue for yoga, the nightclub space feels totally transformed into a chilled oasis (with colourful lights and essential oils). The ambient sound of percussive, dream House music creates a truly extraordinary yoga experience where everyone is welcome to join, whatever your level of experience.

Always up for a challenge, the Sassy team tried out the dynamic Vinyasa Groove class (there’s also Inner Space – a gentle hatha class for those looking for a slower pace!). Read on to find out how we got on…

Experience Level: I would be happy doing yoga every day!
Favourite Exercise: Shavasana – I felt totally relaxed as the class came to an end and we lay in Shavasana, with the dreamy music playing sounds reminiscent of the jungle, it helped me ease my mind and let go of any thoughts.
During the class, I felt… Really focused on the breath. The class was quite a dynamic flow, however, Sophia really focused on taking the time throughout the routine to slow down, reconnect with the breath and find your centre. I thought the pace of the music was perfect for the class and it helped me find my flow and concentrate on the moves.
Afterwards, I felt… Very chilled, stretched and happy with the workout!

Experience Level: Total beginner, but luckily I am flexible!
Favourite Exercise: Dancing to the music.
During the class, I felt… Good vibes and very comfortable. The teacher was lovely and the music was excellent.
Afterwards, I felt… Relaxed and proud after my first yoga experience. And I really want the DJ’s playlist!

Experience Level: I love a good vinyasa flow!
Favourite Exercise: Flowing in and out of dancer pose.
During the class, I felt… A little unfocused at first since I don’t normally practice with music, but once I got into the groove (pun intended), it was much easier to focus on my breathing and posture. Sophie leads a very energetic and well-paced flow, so I was definitely sweaty after the first few rounds. Yoga towels definitely recommended, if you struggle with grip like I do!
Afterwards, I felt… Super chilled out, which was unexpected given the beats and rhythm of the music we were flowing to. Any stress I’d been feeling had completely dissolved by the end of the session.

Experience Level: Lapsed yogi, with good intentions but a serious lack of self-discipline.
Favourite Exercise: Shavasana, because of the super-chilled playlist and not just because I wanted to lie down at the end of the class!
During the class, I felt… Like this was the kickstart I needed to get back into regular practice. Sophie’s class is definitely one to take if you looking for a good workout, and although at first I was struggling (and shaking) my way through the dynamic vinyasas, she walked us through the movements to keep us on track and by the end of the session I felt amazing.
Afterwards, I felt… Re-energised. I was feeling the effects of jet lag and the night after taking the class I slept better than I have in weeks. This yogi is fully back on the wagon!
