Variety of dishes from Samsen Hong Kong, with branches serving Thai food in Central, Sheung Wan and Wan Chai

Wondering where to head for authentic Thai food? From Samsen to Nara, we’ve rounded up the best Thai restaurants in Hong Kong, including popular hotspots, hidden gems and our team’s favourites.

Shaped by diverse influences — Indian, Indonesian, Lao, Malaysian and southern Chinese, to name a few — Thai food is all about balancing salty, sweet, sour, bitter and spicy flavours. Here in Hong Kong, Thai food occupies a unique position in our feverishly multicultural culinary landscape. Although initially finding an epicentre in Kowloon City, where it was first popularised by Thai merchants drawn to trade opportunities, Thai cuisine has since garnered fresh audiences at restaurants across the territory.

From full-flavoured meals to remind you of the Mekong to Michelin-recognised bowls of food inspired by regional tastes and intertwined histories, here’s our roundup of the best Thai restaurants in Hong Kong.

Thai food rice-based dish at Samsen Central, one of the best thai restaurants in Hong Kong

Samsen – Popular Thai restaurant in Wan Chai, Central and Sheung Wan

If the snaking queues outside every Samsen branch tells us anything, it’s that Hongkongers love this particular Thai chain – and are willing to spend over an hour waiting in often sweltering heat in order to dive into an even hotter bowl of boat noodles. Each location has its own identity and some branch-specific dishes, so if you’ve tried one and loved it, make sure to pop into the others too to check out the different delicious plates and drinks.

Must-try dishes: Wagyu beef boat noodle soup, Crispy omelette of baby oysters & spring onions, Khao soi chicken, Young coconut ice cream
Prices: Mains range $148 to $248
Opening hours: 11:45am to 3pm & 6pm to 10pm (until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays)

Tom Yum Koong soup dish from Nara Hong Kong, plus a Tom Kha Gai from Apinara Hong Kong in Pacific Place

Nara, Apinara & Lady Nara – Authentic Thai cuisine brought to Hong Kong from Bangkok

Founded over 20 years ago in Bangkok by a group of female entrepreneurs determined to let diners experience authentic Thai cuisine, Nara quickly became a fan-favourite after opening its doors in Hong Kong in 2018. Then came Apinara Thai Cuisine & Bar which elevated those beloved dishes even more (and offered an Afternoon Tea set) and finally the highly Instagrammable Lady Nara, which cooks up Thai dishes inspired by Western-style comfort food. Honestly, the spread of them across Hong Kong makes it super convenient for most locals to find a branch close enough to try!

Must-try dishes: Tom Yum Kung with king prawns, Grilled pork neck with papaya salad, Soft shell crab yellow curry (with a side of roti!)
Prices: Main generally range $138 to $298
Opening hours: 11:30am to 9:30pm (varies slightly between locations)

Nara, Shop 507, L5, New Town Plaza, 18 Sha Tin Centre Street, Sha Tin, Hong Kong, 3188 1138

Mint & Basil – Thai and Vietnamese restaurant in Sai Wan Ho

Another cuisine favourite of Hongkongers? Vietnamese! So is it any wonder some genius thought to combine the two? This Asian restaurant isn’t really a ‘fusion’ spot per se, because for the most part it doesn’t combine the two cuisines within plates, but rather offers separate iconic dishes from their respective cuisines that stay as close to their roots as possible. To that end, it makes for a great spot for groups of friends with different palates – craving something fiery? Opt for a hot Thai curry. Want something milder but just as wholesome? Vietnamese mains will save the day.

Must-try dishes: Char-grilled beef sirloin, Vietnamese yellow curry with chicken, Thai yellow curry crab meat
Prices: Mains range $108 to $218
Opening hours: Sunday to Thursday, 11am to 10:30pm; Friday, 11am to 12am; Saturday, 11am to 11:30pm

Mint & Basil, Shop 4-6, G/F, Site A, Lei King Wan, Sai Wan Ho, Hong Kong, 2563 3388, uhg.hk/mint-basil

Add Some Thai – Hidden gem fusion Thai restaurant in Kwun Tong

This is a bit of a hit-or-miss spot, you either love it (on a good day) or you don’t really – but to be fair, most of the people who left disappointed didn’t realise this is a Western-Thai fusion restaurant, and as such the ingredients and flavours aren’t exactly what they’re used to. With that being said, Add Some Thai does have a nice ambience – especially for date night – reasonable prices for set menus and a varied selection of dishes, just know what you’re in for beforehand!

Must-try dishes: Thai shrimp and green papaya salad, Tom yum seafood pineapple fried rice, Lychee Yakult smoothie
Prices: Usually $150 to $200 per person
Opening hours: 12pm to 10pm

Add Some Thai, Flat 9D, Block One, Camelpaint Building, 62 Hoi Yuen Road, Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, 5374 1988, IG: @addsomethaihk

Thai chicken green curry, charcoal grilled pork and steamed rice from Chili Club in Wan Chai, Hong Kong, best thai food in HK

Chili Club – Mainstay Thai restaurant in Wan Chai for good reason

If you value the word of someone who’s lived in Thailand for over 6 years, you’ll pay attention: Chili Club is worth a visit. It may not be the bustling hub that required reservations it was a decade or two ago, but the food has remained consistently delicious in its no-frills environment. Editor Veena, who’s spent the majority of her adult life in Phuket, maintains that Chili Club’s Steamed fish with lime, chilli and garlic is one of the best in the world (especially if you like your food hot in every way possible), and she especially appreciates that the staff with helpfully debone your fish if you ask. We highly recommend you go in a group so you can try as many dishes as possible, but then again, did a solo Chicken green curry and Jasmine rice ever hurt anyone?

Must-try dishes: Charcoal grilled pork, Fried prawn with chilli paste, Steamed whole fish with lime, chilli and garlic, Chicken green curry
Prices: Mains generally range $90 to $260
Opening hours: 12pm to 3pm & 6pm to 11pm

Chili Club, 1/F, 88 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, 2527 2872

Siaw – Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant offering Thai street food from Isan

Did you know that when you’re gorging on Grilled pork neck, Papaya salad or Larb, you’re enjoying the Northeastern delicacies of Thailand? You’ll find the usual suspects like Wagyu boat noodles and Pad kra pao, but if you’re after a fiery kick more commonly found up north, go for the Phad kee mao or the sweet-sour Crispy catfish and green mango salad. And make sure to leave room for the desserts – it’s often our favourite part!

Chachawan – Team-favourite Thai restaurant between Sai Ying Pun and Sheung Wan

It’s lunchtime, maybe it’s a special occasion, someone mentions ‘Chachawan’ as an option, and suddenly several members of Team Sassy have jumped onboard and are gleefully heading towards this convenient spot on the border of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun. It’s happened more times than we care to admit, but that tantalising Chacha Lunch menu keeps us coming back. This is another restaurant that centres authentic Isan cuisine, and you’ll find hearty salads, curries and grilled meats here that’ll keep you satiated for a while. Executive editor Suchetana is a fan of the Khao Pad, the wok-fried rice with crab meat, egg and spring onions, whose crabmeat to rice ratio is very generous.

Thai Vegetarian Food – Kowloon City staple serving veggie Thai delights

It’s all in the name really, this popular spot serves vegetarian Thai food. It avoids eggs, milk, meat and onions in its cooking, and is beloved by many, including our team’s resident vegetarian Radha. It’s very much a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, run by an attentive family committed to delicious dining, but it’s built a loyal following over the years for its authentic food and variety of veg dishes. Let us also just say, you don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy the food, meat-eaters can happily chow down here too, as long as you love wholesome Thai flavours!

Sassy Tip: Pop in during lunch for an amazing-value set: Main dish & drink for $60!
