Indie Films and Summer Feels
Summer is all about relaxing and enjoying the sunshine and those laid-back vibes. That’s why I couldn’t wait to check out Hushup’s latest event at Ovolo Southside – a Summer Garden Cinema series. For five Sundays throughout August and September, the quirky event company and trendy hotel have teamed up to screen indie films at the cosy indoor space in Wong Chuk Hang.
Situated on the ground floor, it’s the perfect place to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. I ended up there a little early so grabbed a refreshing grapefruit cider and some pita bread and hummus from the small bar to nibble on beforehand. The set-up inside was similar to the previous Hushup cinema event I’d been to, with deck chairs laid out in front of large projector. When everyone had settled down in their chairs, the off-beat Tim Burton film ‘Edward Scissorhands‘ began.
Sitting back in a deck chair instantly makes you feel relaxed and it was great watching a more indie film that I hadn’t seeing ages. In the first half of the film there were some technical difficulties, but we used the hiccup as a break to go to the bathroom and stock up on more cider and snacks! The film soon resumed and before I knew it, Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder were no longer on the screen.
This little pop-up cinema on the Southside is great if you fancy something different to the regular cinema. Showcasing the ‘alternative’ side of Hollywood, it’s the chance to see a cult film in a more unusual setting.
Fancy checking out the Hushup x Ovolo Summer Cinema yourself? We’ve got two tickets up for grabs for one lucky Sassy reader. They’ll be screening Little Miss Sunshine on Sunday, 11 September from 4 – 6pm at Ovolo Southside in Wong Chuk Hang, so if you fancy a feel good summer movie in a chilled out venue, enter below!
