Brickhouse

Don’t be deterred by the slightly random trek down an alley in LKF to reach Brickhouse – the electric menu and vast choice of Mexican bites are a must-try! We’ve always been fans of its Mexican Street Sweetcorn and the exciting list of cocktails – an awesome party spot, or vibrant dinner date destination.

Brickhouse, G/F, 20A D’Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, Central, Hong Kong, www.facebook.com/brickhousehk

El Loco Gringo

Notorious for its post-work party vibes and spontaneous ‘lock ins’, El Loco Gringo will have you donning a sombrero and up and dancing on the tables before you can say ‘tequila’ (or even had your first)! With authentic Mexican cuisine and a huge selection of cocktails and tequilas, this underground joint is the perfect hub for good vibes and even better grub. Spit Roast Pork Tacos with Pineapple and Habanero Chutney all day every day.

11 Westside

New to the HK Mexican scene, 11 Westside opened up in 2017 to much fanfare. With chef Esdras Ochoa renowned for LA spot Salazar, head here for what many claim to be the best tacos in the 852. The selection on the menu is hard to beat (and range between $35 and $45 a taco), and we highly recommend its new Taco Tuesday offering. Did we mention it also serves up table side guac?

Coyote

If you’ve woken up after a night in Wan Chai a little worse for wear, hugging a sombrero (we’ve all been there), we’d put money on the fact you had one heck of a night in Coyote… or at least popped in for one of its famous margaritas! From burritos to tacos and gooey, cheese-filled quesadillas, eat your fill of Mexican favourites here – the perfect pit-stop to get the night started any day of the week.

Coyote, 114–120 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong

Coyote, Shop G08A, Block A, DB Plaza, Discovery Bay, Hong Kong, www.coyote.com.hk

Chino

Kennedy Town has become a ‘hood full of firm foodie favourites in recent years, and Chino is up there on our list with its cool factor and Mexican flare. With street art covering the walls and tasty, Japanese-inspired Mexican dishes on our plates, we can’t get enough of these fusion feasts.

Tequila On Davis

Another K-Town fave, Tequila on Davis is the perfect flavourful hub for brunch, lunch and dinner. Think towering plates of cheesy nachos drenched in gauc and sour cream, and a huge range of specialty tequilas, sure to sustain those weekend-vibes. Hosting an event? ‘Tequila Upstairs’ is the ideal party venue for any shindig, complete with a full range of audio and visual equipment, too.

Caliente

When we opt for Mexican, it’s safe to say that we’re not looking for a light meal you can just pick at – we need hearty and tasty dishes, laden with cheese (there’s no place for calorie counting here). And as one of the only authentic Mexican jaunts in Kowloon, Caliente delivers all of the above. With a lively atmosphere, an array of fruity, frozen tequila treats to choose from, and Crispy Fish Tacos in our sights, we’re more than willing to make the trip across the harbour. Look out for its Mexican Fried Ice Cream, too!

Cali-Mex

If you’re on the prowl for a quick Mexican fix, Cali-Mex has your back with locations across the city and quick, delicious nachos, burritos and quesadillas (we can vouch for that!). Using ingredients such as Aussie Angus beef – grass-fed and hormone free – this is definitely one to try if you’re craving a tasty, wholesome lunch full of spice and flavour.

COA

Okay, we know that this one is more of a bar than a restaurant, but we couldn’t resist sneaking this Oaxaca-inspired cocktail bar into our roundup. Tucked away on Shin Hing Lane (just off Gough Street), the bar features a huge range of Tequila and Mezcal, along with many other Mexican spirits and drinks. Need a recommendation? We loved the refreshing Tepache (a fermented drink made with pineapple skin, sugar and cinnamon), alongside some killer quesadillas.

COA, Shop A, LG/F Wah Shin House, 6-10 Shin Hing Street, Central, Hong Kong, Central, www.coa.com.hk

Taco Chaca

If you’re not feeling a big restaurant and a full-on sit-down meal, check out Taco Chaca – a down-to-earth, affordable and tasty taqueria. The portions are huge (win) and extremely good value for money, and if you don’t mind perching on stools eating off paper plates (hey, we kind of like that) then you’ll fall in love with this Sai Ying Pun hide out. Passing by on your way to work? The breakfast burritos are seriously top-notch!

XOCO

Tucked away on the quiet Mosque Street in SoHo in arguably one of our favourite Mexican haunts in Hong Kong. Understated XOCO is a small restaurant with big – and we mean BIG – portions. The tacos, enchiladas and quesadillas are stuffed full of black beans, rice, your choice of high-quality meat and cheese, so you definitely need to come hungry! For a slightly lighter choice, we recommended the perfectly cooked build-your-own steak fajitas, which are served on a sizzling hot plate. Oh, and don’t forget the frozen margaritas served in adorable cactus glasses!

XOCO, 31 – 37 Mosque Street, Mid-levels, Hong Kong, www.facebook.com/xocosoho

Tequila Jacks

Tequila Jacks in TST is a city classic, serving up a huge variety of Mexican staples, washed down with plenty of drinks. The casual spot is great for groups of friends, and don’t miss out on its Taco Tuesday deal – with Tacos at just $10 with the purchase of at least one drink.

Agave

Big night out? Well obviously, it’s time for tequila shots – and lots of them! Agave is the place to go for one of the largest selections of high-quality Mexican tequilas, and with its great happy hour deals, the vibe is infectious. Order a couple of pitchers and share a few helpings of tacos, fajitas or burritos amongst the group, and you’re good to go!
