Mexican food has got to be up there as one of our favourite cuisines. And though many complain that our city’s offerings can be a little lacklustre, we think that there’s plenty on offer to enjoy. From authentic tacos to the more American-influenced cheese-laden varieties, whatever your preference, you can be sure we know where to find it. So get hungry, because here are our picks of the best Mexican restaurants in Hong Kong (guac included, of course).
Since opening its doors in May 2019, Taqueria Super Macho has drawn in the crowds for its authentic take on tacos. The lively restaurant is inspired by the laidback taquerias of Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas, and brings a taste of Baja to the streets of SoHo. We love that the tacos are served “naked”, so that you can DIY your own creation with the variety of toppings available, including cabbage, onion, cilantro and a range of sauces and salsas. Don’t miss out on trying the Crispy Shrimp Taco or the fully loaded Grilled Chicken Tostada, and be sure to wash it all down with a frozen margarita.

Don’t be deterred by the slightly random trek down an alley in LKF to reach Brickhouse – the eclectic menu and vast choice of Mexican bites make it a must-try! We’ve always been fans of its Mexican Street Sweetcorn and the exciting list of cocktails, which help to make it an awesome party spot, or vibrant dinner date destination. Brickhouse also offers an unbeatable Saturday night brunch featuring free-flow drinks, unlimited portions of tacos and more.

Opening in Hong Kong in 2017 to much fanfare, many claim that 11 Westside offers up the best tacos in the city. Brought to the 852 by chef Esdras Ochoa (of renowned LA spot Salazar), expect fresh Mexican ingredients, handmade corn tortillas and a selection of tacos. Priced between $48 and $58, tacos on offer cover everything from the classic Al Pastor and Carnitas, to Mango Shrimp and California Veggie creations. Plus, did we mention that the restaurant also serves up table-side guac?

Another newcomer to the Hong Kong Mexican scene, El Macho opened in early 2019 and offers a colourful and vibrant setting, along with a range of flavourful plates. Classics such as quesadillas, burritos and fajitas are all on the menu, but we’re fans of its Nachos – made with homemade corn tortilla chips and a range of hearty toppings.

Found in the heart of LKF, Los Sotano is a Mexican secret hideout that serves a selection of Mexican fare and experimental agave-based drinks. Find the secret barrel door to discover your way in and enter into an underground world – that’s far away from the busy streets of Central. Taking its stylistic cue from Oaxaca, the bar’s walls are embellished with gold skulls. Okay, we know that this one is more of a bar than a restaurant, but we couldn’t resist sneaking this Oaxaca-inspired cocktail bar into our roundup. Tucked away on Shin Hing Lane (just off Gough Street), the bar (which is currently number 12 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list for 2019), features a huge range of Tequila and Mezcal, along with many other Mexican spirits and drinks. Need a recommendation? We loved the Horchata De Pistacho, alongside some killer guac and chips.
