Sassy’s Guide to Shisha: Hookah Hook-ups for Every Mood

Shisha spots around town

Hong Kong’s shisha scene is smokin’ (forgive me), and with all the weird, wonderful, shapes, flavours and sizes of options fogging up our decision-making, how on earth do we pick? Whether you’re in the mood for something shamelessly fun or simply authentic, we’re rounding up our top hookah spots in the 852. Enjoy our shisha picks for every occasion.

Awtar

Feeling… intimate.

Mediterranean flavour and flare arrive in Soho in the form of premium shisha and cocktails (Almond Coffee Martini, marry me). New and popular to the shisha scene, don’t be discouraged if this snug Staunton Street spot seems packed at first glance. Awtar is a two-story bar with enough room to relax and indulge. Expect a wide range of flavoured tobacco paired with organic fruit and be refreshed with its signature cool ice-pipes. The traditional cosy, Turkish lamp decor draws you in, and the lush, consistently long-lasting smokes make it hard to leave.

Mahalo

Feeling… fun!

Say, “Aloha!” to Mahalo! Towering far above the crowds in QRE Plaza, Mahalo is new to the shisha scene and has only recently upgraded its already memorable tropical chic lounge scene with the addition of a wild shisha menu to match. Its short-but-sweet selection provides an escape from traditional flavours (Blueberry Muffin, Mint Chocolate Chill, just to name a few). The Tiki bar’s open terrace spoils you with a birds-eye view of Wanchai as you puff away and peruse a treasure map in quest of your next indulgence.

Sumac

Feeling… authentic.

This sneaky shisha spot is nestled right above Lan Kwai Fong, making it the perfect escape from mayhem. A door up from its authentic Lebanese restaurant, the Sumac lounge is an absolute hookah haven: a warm terracotta room full of rustic wooden furnishings with its own secluded terrace. The custom-made shisha pipes are easy on the eyes and even smoother on the lungs. Natural coals and traditional flavours, if it’s not true to its heritage, you won’t find it here.

Boba Bear

Feeling… flavourful!

Originally from Los Angeles, Boba Bear has been welcomed to Hong Kong with (ahem) open lungs. We love B.B. for its large and uniquely delicious flavour selection (Um… Spiced Chai… White Peach… yes, please!). With 40 flavours of hookah to choose from, or a sample tray (a test-tube rack sampling all flavours), you can’t go wrong. You can mix and match up to three flavours at a time, so go wild! Additional add-ons come in the form of pineapple bowls, ice bases or your choice of wine/spirit mixers. With two great locations – Soho and Causeway Bay – we say check out the Causeway spot if you’re in the mood for a breezy rooftop view with your smoke.

Vibes

Feeling… extra.

A repeat offender of our previous shisha round-up, Vibes is the bar embodiment of this year’s good vibes only motto. This secret garden lounge is hidden atop Kowloon’s Mira Hotel courtyard, secluded yet alfresco. Vibes’ very own shisha sheikh (yes, really) prepares the freshest hookahs with authentic flavours for the longest lasting, thickest smokes. Lie back on any of the comfy sofas or splurge a little more on a private cabana with friends. If you still need to raise the stakes, the atmosphere is amped up even more on Thursdays, with belly dance performances, Arabic lounge beats and mezzo platters galore. Surprisingly affordable for a hotel bar, Vibes proves it’s here to stay in our top picks.

Vibes, Vibes, 5/F, The Mira, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, www.themirahotel.com/en/dining/vibes.aspx
