Niseko – the perfect ski destination

3 January, 2013

An all-time favourite location for skiers, Niseko has the most beautiful powder snow in the world. Whatโ€™s more, the Grand Hirafu Mountain just refurbished their gondola, making it even easier and more comfortable for skiers to get uphill โ€“ so what better time to pay Niseko a visit!

WHERE TO STAY

We got to stay in the penthouse of one of Hokkaido Tracksโ€™ properties Yama Shizen, which was absolutely perfect for a ski holiday. It came with all the necessary facilities (and many more besides!) including a far-too well-equipped pantry, washing machine, fireplace and three big bedrooms with their own bathrooms; we even had our own Jacuzzi sitting on the balcony! Even though it was minus 3 degrees outside, we didnโ€™t regret risking being frozen and jumping into the Jacuzzi to enjoy the great view of Mount Youtei around us.

WHAT TO EAT

After a day of skiing, whatโ€™s more comforting than having a Nabe (Japanese hotpot) to fill your stomach and warm your cockles, all made with the freshest ingredients from Hokkaido? You can even get this delivered straight to your chalet! Believe it or not, a chef can also come to your place and make sushi on-site especially for you โ€“ simply place an order before you ski out the day before.

WHAT TO DO

If you are not yet an advanced skier, you can book private lessonsโ€ฆ and the first thing all coaches teach is how to fall properly! There is also a ski centre near the lift for you to store your ski equipment overnight, so that you can ski freely throughout your stay without having to carry the 10kg ski equipment to the lift every morning.

So if you are adventurous and energetic enough, start planning your Niseko ski trip now!
