New Cupcake Shop Kisses Opens on Hong Kong’s Gough Street

22 December, 2011

New places are opening up on Gough Street faster than we can keep up with them – we’d only just completed our fab Gough Street guide when we discovered a brand new Agnes B Cafe opening up next to Sidewalk (seriously?! How can Agnes B possibly continue to expand at such a rate? It’s mystifying!) and then just a little bit further down, a super-cute little cupcake shop called Kisses Cupcakes has appeared.

The cute little shop has a counter at the back with wooden trays filled with the little cupcakes in flavours like Red Velvet, Triple Chocolate, Vanilla and Green Tea, and then a teeny cafe area where you can munch happily on your purchases! I picked out a Vanilla and Triple Chocolate cupcake to take away for trial purposes. My husband (he’s making a cameo in the pic above!) and I tucked in, and loved the moist cake, but were a teensy bit disappointed that the buttercream icing wasn’t sweeter. I like the kind of frosting that’s so sweet it makes my teeth hurt! When I chatted later with Kisses owner, Jasmine, she told me that the semi-sweet icing was an intentional adjustment of the (originally American) recipe to suit local Hong Kong tastes, which run to less sweet than Western.

While Kisses cupcakes didn’t quite hit my sweet spot, they’re nonetheless a good choice if you’re looking for a sugar high in Noho – you’ll love the design and choice of flavours, and their adorable packaging would make them a fab hostess gift!
