Intimate luxury at The Surin, Phuket in Thailand

7 March, 2012

The Chedi was long a bastion of hi-design and sophisticated luxury on the often lowbrow shores of Phuket; now renamed The Surin, the resort continues to define an intimate, unpretentious island experience. With its dramatic lobby front, striking hexagonal pool, and cosy cottages dotted along the beachfront and hillside, the design by renowned architect Ed Tuttle continues to be iconic and quietly glamorous.

In recent years, the interiors have inevitably become a tad worn and dated and, though still comfortable, it was definitely time for a refurbishment. This has finally been completed under the aegis of Tuttle himself, guiding a tasteful facelift to his creation. Cottages are brightened in cool grey and subtle gold, creating a modern feel that is warm and understated, while the shared areas retain their open atmosphere, incorporating natural textures and unobtrusive local accents.

Sprightlier guests can opt for the Hillside cottages, with private terraces overlooking spectacular views of lush grounds and lovely Pansea Beach, the Surin’s own private stretch of sand. More easily accessible from the lobby are the Superior and Deluxe Cottages, and the beachfront Suites.

The Spa has also been updated and is more heavenly than ever – book any package that includes a dip in their outdoor stone bath. While immersion in the fragrant, petal-strewn waters is itself a rare indulgence (especially accompanied by a pot of herbal tea and light homemade biscuits), it is the view that completes the experience – relax while gazing over the sparkling Andaman Sea.

The Lomtalay Thai Restaurant presents an extensive breakfast spread to tempt all palates; at other meal times, enjoy superb richly-flavoured local cuisine that is a far cry from the often bland tourist fare you find elsewhere. Ease yourself into the evening with an expertly mixed cocktail at the aptly named Sunset Bar, a reassuringly laid back venue.

Location, location, location – this is one of The Surin’s most obvious charms. The sole resort set on Pansea Beach, it enjoys an essentially secluded piece of coast removed from other holidaymakers and aggressive hawkers, though beachside drinks and massages are available from select local businesses. But guests looking for a livelier outing have only to make a short stroll to reach Surin Beach proper, by way of some very enticing boutiques – have a gander at the aromatic lotions and potions at Lemongrass House. Though well-lined with restaurants, bars and massage stations, the vibe is more refined and family friendly than the sometimes vulgar Patong.  Recommended Surin hotspots include Catch Beach Club, Liquid Lounge and Stereo Lab.

Rates are from THB 6,700+++ per night during low season; for more information or to make a booking, please contact [email protected].
