With everything from art-inspired cocktails to new happy hours with a view, March is a shaping up to be a big month for our social lives! With warmer weather just around the corner, we’re making the most of the weather and heading out to the best rooftop bars in the city, as well as checking out the latest openings, drinks menus and happy hour deals.
Lovers of Sai Ying Pun gin bar, Ping Pong 129, get excited, as the owners have just opened up little sister, DAI BING. Found in Sheung Wan, the new drinks spot specialises in long drinks, and will also host music events and art exhibitions. Long drinks on offer include Tequila Highball, Starfruit Spritzer, Gin & Tonics, Pimm’s Cup and more, and are all served in tall glasses with plenty of ice and mixers, with the purpose to quench, cool and delight – perfect for when the Hong Kong heat sets in. The bar is also home to Hong Kong’s first Artisanal Ice Suite, a specialised series of rooms dedicated to the production of artisanal ice, resulting in crystal-clear, dense ice that is harder, colder and slower to melt. The food on offer will feature a selection of Portuguese petiscos (snacks), including Cured Meat and Cheeses, Eggplant Chamuças (Portuguese style samosas) and Chicken and Coriander Chamuças.

New Menus & Drinks
If you’re heading to Sai Ying Pun pizza joint, Homeslice, this month, don’t forget to try out one or two of its new drink offerings. Sure to compliment the Neapolitan-style pizzas, the new cocktails include the likes of London’s Calling ($90), made with gin, ginger syrup, American ale and lemon, along with Personality Crisis ($85), which is a blend of vodka, Aperol, bubbles, rose, passionfruit, and a splash of rock ‘n’ roll glitter. The Homeslice drinks menu also includes a selection of local brews, with Gweilo American IPA ($65), Heroes Hangry Donut ($70) and Young Master Rye on Wood ($75) on tap, as well as cans from Heroes Beer Co, Gweilo Beer, Carbon Brews and Young Master Brewery. Be sure to swing by Monday to Friday, between 5pm and 7pm for buy one, get one craft beers and cocktails! And if you’re after a non-alcoholic option, don’t forget that the restaurant also serves up a range of milkshakes. We’ve got our eye on The Salty Dog ($80), made with salted caramel and peanut butter.

March is Art Month in Hong Kong with events happening all over the city. Ming Fat House restaurants (Mrs. Pound, Dr. Fern’s Gin Parlour, and Foxglove), will all be offering six different limited-edition Art Basel cocktails (priced between $130 and $160 each), available at each bar from 1 March to 31 March.
Mrs. Pound will be playing homage to one her favourite fashion designers and role models, Vivienne Westwood, with the drink My Way ($130). Inspired by Vivienne’s conscious and sustainable efforts, the cocktail uses the elements of an entire grapefruit, coupled with Mrs. Pound’s homemade grapefruit jam, fresh grapefruit juice, Tanqueray Gin, lime juice and egg whites. Throughout the month, Mrs Pound will also serve the Say Cheese ($140), with blue cheese fat-washed Tio Pepe, Campari and black walnut bitters.
Meanwhile, at Dr. Fern’s Gin Parlour, guests will be able to sip on the Flowers in the Snow ($160), a cocktail inspired by Robert Tracy’s mysterious painting that demonstrates how flowers rejuvenate the soul. The unique cocktail features marshmallow-infused gin, honey, cream, egg white, soda, and local jasmine tea. Also on offer at Dr. Ferns will be The Blossom ($160), made with an array of edible flowers, along with Whitley Neill Quince Gin and London Essence Bitter Orange & Elderflower.
Wrapping things up for the month, Foxglove’s creations will include the Amazon Sour ($140), which is inspired by the elderflower trees at the port of Manaus in the Brazilian Amazon. It’s set to be a mix of vodka, elderflower liquor, cardamom syrup, lemon juice, Thai basil and egg whites, along with the Goldmine ($160), which comprises Bulleit Bourbon Whiskey, Campari, Aperol, sweet vermouth, activated charcoal and mace tincture.

Whether you work around Central, or just frequent ifc to check out the shops, SHÈ’s new happy hour is worth stopping by for. Daily from 4pm to 8pm, SHÈ will serve up a range of cocktails with a modern Chinese spin, including Night Jasmine ($78), with Carlo Alberto White Vermouth, yuzu juice and jasmine syrup, and Old Shanghai ($78) with Chinese spicy sugar, black label whisky, Woodford bourbon and yuzu soda. The menu will also include an array of classic cocktails, including Negroni and Old-Fashioned (both $78), along with premium spirits and draught beer and wines ($68). To compliment your drinks, be sure to order some nibbles, which are priced at 10% off during happy hour, and include Taro Spring Rolls ($46), Crispy Fried Wontons ($68), Crispy Squid with Salt & Pepper ($88), Drunken Chicken Mid-Wings ($148) and more. Be sure to make the most of SHÈ’s terrace, complete with stunning views of Victoria Harbour.

Another new happy hour in Central can be found at the Flying Elk. Available every night from 6pm to 8pm, the deal includes $60 cocktail specials, that are expertly created in Scandi-style by the bar team. The drinks menu is set to change frequently, but guests can expect gin & tonics, spritz and unique cocktails made using Nordic ingredients. Choose to sip yours at the bar counter and watch the pros at work, or take your drink out to the leafy terrace and enjoy the views overlooking Central.

We’ve long been fans of Alvy’s for its incredible pizzas and great range of local and international craft brews. But its happy hour also draws us in time and time again. Taking place on weekdays between 4pm and 7pm, and on weekends from 11am to 7pm, head here and enjoy a relaxed drink with friends, with craft beers and wines starting at $50.
