Kuckoo for Kylie: Is the Lip Kit Worth The Hype?

Sassy Girl, Shafa, got her hands on the coveted Lip Kit by Kylie Jenner and puts it to the test!

I’ve been secretly nursing a Kardashian-Jenner obsession for a while now, so naturally, when Kylie, the youngest of the daughters, launched her Lip Kit, I knew I had to get my hands on these babies. After stalking the Kylie Jenner app daily, waking up early for the restock and waiting two weeks for international shipping, I found myself the proud owner of #22, her newest burnt-orange shade, as well as Dolce K, a medium-beige nude.

The first application: Each #KylieLipKit (US$29) contains a matte liquid lipstick and a matching pencil lip liner. The lip liner glided easily on my lips, but the liquid formula lipstick smelled way too sweet, dangerously toeing the line between cupcake frosting and nasty cherry cough syrup. As soon as I had applied the liquid colour on my lips, I thought “Dear God, this was a mistake”, because the texture had the consistency of diluted paint. Ten seconds later though, after the formula had dried, I did a complete 180 and was convinced this was the best matte lipstick formula I’d ever felt on my lips. In other words, I was a Konvert.

Feel test: The formula felt feathery-light and thin on my lips, yet had a beautiful, solid and matte coverage. The secret behind this is the high-intensity pigment combined with moisturising ingredients for a comfortable, emollient and silky feel. And, oh, how silky my lips felt! Regular matte lipsticks tend to be really drying especially on the edges of my lip, but Kylie’s formula did not feel anywhere near as drying. (Rating: A+)

Lick and drink test: I licked my lips several times within a minute of application, and found that (a) I did not taste anything, (b) nothing travelled from my lips to my tongue, and (c) the colour is still solid. (Rating: A+)

Drink test: I drink a lot of green tea at work, and would constantly have to wipe my lipstick marks from the rim of my white cup, but with the Lip Kit, the rim remained pristine, save the occasional tiny fleck or two of lip colour. (Rating: A+)

Food test: After a meal of mac & cheese (which required a lot of cheesy lip-licking), I was happy to say the colour had stayed on most of my lips, despite my not having done the usual primer/blot/powder routine to make regular lipsticks last longer. There was no bleeding, and the only areas that had faded were the inner area – with my lips closed, it looked like nothing had come off. (Rating: A)

In conclusion, the Lip Kit by Kylie Jenner is a worthwhile investment for both longtime lipstick adherents and those looking to make the transition from lip gloss to lipstick (what we call #adulting).
