New Store?! – Gap in Hong Kong

Update: Maura heard right! Gap is now well and truly in Hong Kong – and here are all the vital details…

Gap, 31 Queen’s Road, Central, Hong Kong, 2885 0789

Opening hours: Monday-Saturday 10am-10pm, Sunday 11am-9pm

I heard a rumour this week that I really, really, really hope is real. Hester also heard it from another source so I am starting to get a teeny bit confident that it will come true. The absolutely fantabulous news is that the Gap is coming to Hong Kong! Hearing these words was like music to my ears as the Gap is pretty much my go-to place in the US for simple basics. The Gap was on my walk home from work when I was living in NYC and I can’t even begin to count the number of times I found myself popping in after a stressful day and comforting myself with some good old retail therapy. Oh, and don’t even get me started on Baby Gap. I simply love buying new baby gifts there and I have been missing it desperately as all I want to do these days is spoil Hester’s baby girl rotten with pretty dresses.

Basically from what I have heard (and now read on Gap’s website) is that stores will open in Beijing and Shanghai first in late 2010 and then Hong Kong will follow in the coming year. Until then fellow Hong Kongers we will just have to settle for the fact that the Gap is available via online shopping.

So, upon hearing this new I have been prematurely teasing myself by looking longingly at their website and here are a few looks/things I am adding to my wish list.

Get here fast Gap!

It is true! I was just in Beijing over the weekend and actually went into the first Gap in Beijing, on it’s grand opening day, no less. I asked the American store manager about Gap in HK, and she said that HK will probably have it’s first gap in 2011 and China will likely have 20 by that time! Maybe Banana Republic will follow suit.

Well, technically speaking the yet-to-be-opened GAP won’t be the first GAP store in Hong Kong. DFS (Duty Free Shopping) in TST used to have a small concession years ago in about the late 90s (that closed) and then a small-ish outlet opened with the launch of LCX in Harbour City, TST in the 2003/2004(?). GAP failed in in its previous attempts to crack the HK market because they were very overpriced for what they were offering and people couldn’t (and didn’t) see why they had to pay a lot more for stuff that they could get for a lot less at Giordano or Bossini. It’ll be interesting to see what their price points will be when they relaunch in HK. If the GAP executives are reading this: take heed, keep your prices real and your quality top-notch or you’ll most likely fail AGAIN. Casual clothing may reign in HK, but people have a lot more options now with H&M, Monki and Zara around.

Does anyone know if they have opened yet?
I know American Eagle has opened yesterday!
When will The Gap and Forever 21 open?
Also, do you know where The Gap will open?

P.s- Do you know if any other major US/ UK labels will be in hk anytime soon?

  7. Hester says:

Hi Melinda – they haven’t opened yet… It’s possible it was just a rumour after all!

  8. Shirley says:

I was in BJ and SH last week. Yes confirmed Gap will come to HK is Sept, 2011. 100% sure!

  9. Maura says:

Yay! I am currently in the US and have stocked up on their tanks so I am very happy to hear that they will be in HK in the fall. Am so tired of lugging so many new clothes back from the states!
