Our latest Sassy fashion find is TIKKA (not to be confused with cute café Teakha!), a fabulously trendy multi-brand women’s clothing boutique positioned on the very hip and happening Gough Street. Stocking several international brands plus their own clothing line, the selection is not exactly extensive, but we guarantee that you will struggle to walk out of the shop without making a purchase!
Doris Qui, Creative Director at TIKKA Boutique (shown above!), left a career in law to follow her passion for fashion – and thank goodness she did, as Doris certainly has a keen eye for what to wear! With prices ranging between $800 to $4,000 a piece, TIKKA gets new stock in nearly every week, in limited quantities so you won’t be bumping into someone at your next cocktail party wearing the same thing. Doris also embarks on regular buying trips to destinations such as France, Australia, Korea and Japan to find you the most cutting edge styles around.
Some of our favourite labels that TIKKA currently stocks include Leila Shams (the perfect choice for party frocks), reasonably priced Korean brand Command A and the much-loved Aussie label Shakuhachi (great for irresistible on-trend pieces). For jeans, there’s Sass & Bide for denim staples and Bleulab, an exciting American denim brand that designs genuinely reversible jeans… yes, that’s right, two looks for the price of one! We tell no lies – these jeans are revolutionary!
However, we think that the true gem of a find here is actually Doris’s own up and coming clothing line, The Letter Q. When we visited, the AW12/13 collection Dramatic Minimalist was in-store, consisting of quirky pieces with classic and structured tailoring and lines, using quality fabrics from Italy and Japan. Doris informed us that all pieces are made in China in the same workshop as the likes of New York designers Phillip Lim and Zac Posen! Embodying the minimalistic contemporary lines of these great designers, there was a sports element running through the collection – we especially loved Doris’ self-designed laser-cut swirly lace shirt (above centre), which is perfect for the non-girly girl who wants to wear lace but not with all the French roses. This would look great buttoned up and worn with a black bra, tucked into slim fitted black pants or layered with a fluro cami underneath.
On the accessories front, TIKKA is not missing a beat – the store is literally overflowing with must-have shoes, jewellery, belts and clutches! We instantly gravitated to the soft-as-a-baby’s-bottom metallic leather peplum belts (for more peplum inspiration, see here!). Doris sources a lot of her jewellery from markets in Australia and Japan, and as a result, there are fairly reasonable buys to be found ($200-$300 for earrings). We loved the varied collection of statement necklaces, cuffs and earrings; think embellished jewels and lots of bling or opt for more edgy tribal pieces with studded accents. TIKKA also stocks Lotus Mendes, an Australian jewellery line that’s a bit of an Ozzie celeb fave.
If you have a shoe fetish, there’s loads of ultra-trendy footwear here too including heels, wedges, boots and brogues from Matiko (super popular in the US) and the sublime Scandinavian brand Mista.
So be sure to swing by TIKKA whenever your wardrobe feels like an upgrade – you will not regret the sheer exhilarating and uplifting sensation that only retail therapy can bring!
