We all have one: short sleeved, midi, lace, bodycon; yes that’s right, it’s the LBD (Little Black Dress). However, in recent times, and in a recent tan we may have acquired at Shek O Beach, we (and many Insta-bloggers we have stalked) have found that our trusty LBD has been taken over by the LWD. Not only does the Little White Dress emphasise our bronzy glow, but it is also the epitome of summer. Light in colour, the cute bohemian styles, embroidered bell sleeves and Grecian maxi dresses all in a cloud-coloured palette have thrown us a curve ball and has made us question what should be a wardrobe essential.
Team LBD suggests black not only looks good on everyone, but is also seasonless. You can whip out your trusty LBD for almost any occasion and most certainly feel your best, and could even argue those late night pizza slices from Paisano’s would not be a bad idea in a LBD, but most certainly be a disaster whilst wearing white. However, the LWD has a certain je ne sais quoi about it, you know? It just feels like summer.
Yet there is a time and a place to wear the iconic LWD; and we have rounded up what LWD to wear and when to wear it, so embrace the sun and get your tan on in these Hong Kong hot spots with your new BFF.
Embroidery was a big hit last year for summer, from Grecian style patterns, to floral garnishes. With the 30-degree sun pounding down on sunny Repulse Bay opt for the modern, and more wearable day-to-day, update by Alexander McQueen on Net-A-Porter for those who like to splurge. Or keep it colourful and cute with Zara’s floral number; perfect for lazy days at the ‘Bay or something to quickly throw on for an instant hit for when you’re sipping rooftop cocktails with the girls after the sun sets.

There will be nobody like Marilyn but we can certainly be inspired by her iconic LWD. ASOS has its own take on the cream coloured garment, with a plunging neckline and scuba fabrications; whilst Net-A-Porter holds Balmain’s Jacquard Knit Plunge Dress, which is more than enough of an excuse to buy some extra cocktails after Ladies Night has finished.

You can’t go wrong with a classic shift dress like Jackie O proved with her LWD moment. Head to Zalora for a daytime shift, complete with a varsity trim and for only $179 it will be difficult to turn down. However, if you are feeling very much like Jackie O herself, Gucci at Net-A-Porter has to be the only option. Faux pearl-embellished wool with a silk blend makes us think that Jackie O most definitely had to be the muse behind this piece.

With a comeback in recent years, the slip dress has become a wardrobe staple. As our good friends Liz and Gwyneth have shown, the slip dress can be worn almost anywhere; from red carpet events or for a day time look by throwing a t-shirt underneath; it’s pretty much one of the most versatile dresses you can own. Zara’s sister brand Stradivarius has a modern take on the nineties slip with a lace up detailing at the back, which would have probably been seen on Liz circa 1999. ASOS has its own version; square neck, thick straps and ribbed vest detailing a la Kim Kardashian has us swooning over our computers. With its figure-hugging silhouette, there’s no worry of the wind catching the skirt and flashing your friends by having a Marilyn moment.

Ah, Michelle Obama, the First Lady of Fashion since Jackie O. Even though Michelle may no longer be in the White House, we can still be inspired by her fashion moments. The off shoulder trend doesn’t seem to be going anywhere thanks to the former First Lady, and in a cream palette you can’t go wrong. From Celeb Stylist Rachel Zoe comes the classic off shoulder dress of your dreams from Net-A-Porter. Whilst Mango has its own take and has added a cute ruffle detail on the neckline, perfect for those Wednesday night trips to the races, when the humidity is at its peak and you need an outfit which is breathable. Decisions, decisions…
