A journey back in time – The Majestic Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

25 August, 2015

Transport yourself to 1930s Malaysia…

Travelling is all about taking in new sights, exploring different cultures and feeling like you’re somewhere completely different… and if you manage to stay at The Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, you’ll also feel like you’ve stepped back in time! Simply sink into one of their elegant bathtubs and you’ll be transported to a bygone era of glamour and sophistication. The colonial-style hotel was first built in the 1930s and was the pride of Malaysia – now it’s been lovingly restored and combines the best of the art deco period with all the amenities required by a traveller of this century.

The Majestic Hotel is located a mere 30 minutes away from the airport, so it was perfect for the weekend getaway we had planned. We were looking forward to the elegant setting, but what we didn’t expect was how the staff would put our needs and wants above everything else… no request was too small and they made sure it happened.

THE ROOMS

As soon as you step into the hotel, you’re treated like royalty. We were welcomed with an afternoon tea at the lobby lounge along with their signature cocktails before checking in as we were taken into our room. Upon checking in, you have the choice to stay in either the Majestic Wing or the Tower Wing – each comes with its own charm. The Majestic Wing has 48 rooms and every room comes with a butler, laundry service and a private car to use at your disposable when touring Kuala Lumpur. They also all have living rooms, perfect for a family trip or for a girls weekend. If the rooms here don’t scream luxury to you, you need to tell me what you do for a living!

The Tower Wing was constructed more recently as an extension of the property and houses 248 rooms along with the swimming pool, gym and their ballroom, which can seat up to 1,200 guests without a pillar in sight – definitely a perfect venue for a destination wedding. But don’t think you’re missing out on the old world feel if you opt for this wing, as it still manages to exude a retro vibe with glamours furnishings and decor.

THE SPA

We can’t have a true Sassy review unless we check out the Spa, which is aptly named ‘The Majestic Spa‘. This relaxing spa is based on a Scottish Tea room and also has treatments based around this theme. They have a wide variety of treatments ranging from Lavender and Rosemary-based facials to soothing massages, and the therapists know how to ease away all those knots before a night out on the town. If you need a wake-me-up like after the super relaxing massage, you can also enjoy a dip in the private infinity pool surrounded by a beautiful frangipani garden.

THE FOOD

Food is a national obsession in Malaysia, so of course The Majestic has this very important area covered with two great restaurants – The Colonial Café in the Majestic Wing and The Contango in the Tower Wing. The Contango offers a buffet selection for all meals and I only have one word for it – grand! You are spoilt for choice with the range of cuisines and live stations, and the chefs take all dietary requirements in their stride. The Colonial Cafe differs as it combines authentic classical cuisine in a stunning colonial setting… this is the place to come for a really special meal where you’ll feel like you’re back in the 1930s.

SASSY FAVOURITES

One of my favourite things about this hotel was all the little nooks and corners which each had a different story to tell. The Afternoon Tea is hugely popular at The Majestic Hotel and having tried it out myself I can personally vouch for it! It has the best balance of sweet and savoury which I was really impressed with, as most tea-sets do tend to lean on the sweeter side. You can also opt to have your tea at The Tea Lounge, the restaurant or at a secret orchid garden conservatory, which connects the two wings of the hotel. This was my favourite place to curl up with a book and immerse myself in the elegant, colonial world.

The Majestic Hotel also houses The Smoke House, which is similar to a Gentleman’s Club where you can privately dine with your own personal chef, indulge in the Cigar Room, visit the grooming room, and enjoy a private cinema and bar. It was the perfect location for me when I need to finishing off a couple of emails while enjoy a glass of wine before my flight back to HK!
