Ibrahim Mahama: Half of a Yellow Sun
Ghanian artist Ibrahim Maham’s first show in Hong Kong opens this Friday at White Cube. Taking inspiration from the novel of the same name by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “Half of a Yellow Sun” explores a period of independence from colonial British rule across Africa — with the exhibition showcasing a selection of new fabric paintings that explore the history of its materials, commerce and cultural identity.
For example, the densely patterned and colourful ‘Dutch wax’ cloth was originally made and traded by Dutch companies, incorporating traditional Indonesian batik design before eventually making its way to Africa and becoming synonymous with African design and culture.
Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 7pm
