Free-flow Sangria paired with Spanish Tapas

To be honest, put “free-flow” in front of anything and I will be down to try it – what can I say, I love a deal. This occasion was no different; in fact, the idea of delicious, fruity Sangria goodness made it a no-brainer.

Tucked away between Wyndham Street and Lan Kwai Fung, Zafran is a classy, well-camouflaged reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding area. The idea that this underground resto has been around for a few years without my knowledge stresses me out a little – what else have I been missing?!

So what’s the deal? Well, Zafran is currently offering a two-hour free-flow Sangria deal every day from 12-3pm and again from 6pm til’ late. To sweeten the deal even more – this isn’t your ordinary sangria – there is a selection of four unique Sangrias to choose from, so you’ll never be bored. As part of the deal, you have the option to pick from red, white, rosé or cava sangria… I opted for all four because, free-flow!

I felt it would be best to start off with the classic – red wine sangria – which is appropriately titled Hola Chica! The gorgeous drink arrived in a little jug (complete with sturdy handle for drinking ease – perfect!) and consists of red wine, brandy, triple sec and orange juice, all of which was topped off with a bounty of fresh berries and lime. It was almost too pretty to drink… almost.

Being a sucker for the white vino, I decided to sample the Playa Blanca next. This delectable cocktail includes white wine, gin, triple sec, martini bianco (vermouth), orange juice and, of course, boasts a mound of fresh fruit to top it off. Really, who needs tapas when you have a fruit salad in your drink? This one was definitely the sweetest of the bunch.

I saved the most unique and intriguing sangria for last – the Cheeky Cava. Cava is the Prosecco of Spain – it is a sparkling wine produced only in Catalonia. The Cheeky Cava, made of cava, gin, triple sec, and pineapple juice, was similar to the Playa Blanca, but with a little fizz and more tart flavour. Being a fan of all things bubbly, this was definitely one of my faves!

Although the drinks are definitely the star of the show, what is sangria without a few tapas? We scarfed down a few crispy ham and mushroom croquetas ($55), some Padron peppers in sea salt (despite the name are not the least bit spicy, $65), and the Tartar de Gambas ($190). Everything was fresh, tasty, and served quickly – everything important in my books!

Overall, this has got to be one of the best free-flow deals around. And unlike others, you are not limited to a specific day, time, or drink choice! The Sangria was top notch with an equal balance of all the flavours with just the right amount of sweetness. This, on top of the friendly (not to mention talented) staff, classy atmosphere, and affordable price makes me think that Zafran should be your next girls-night-out destination for sure. I’ll probably see you there!

Pro-tip: the bread is to die for – served warm, soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside.

Free-flow deal available any day of the week for two hours, $188 per person
