Signature Piri – Piri in SoHo + Win a Dinner for Two
We’ve divulged our love of Piri-Piri in the past, praising Flaming Frango‘s fiery Portuguese dishes and sampling our way through their delish menu, but we’ve recently headed back to indulge in their hearty meals made for sharing! We’re talking signature dishes that not only delight but are the perfect accompaniment to a girly catch up or friend date…
Tucked away on Staunton Street, Flaming Frango looks wonderfully unassuming from the outside. Easy to overlook, be sure to keep your eye out as you stroll the streets. Made for sharing in more ways than one, their upstairs is the perfect place to kickback and dig into their delicious chicken with ten of your closest friends.
As always friends, Frango’s drinks list is extensive! Whether you’re a sangria fanatic like myself or looking to sink a quick beer, you’re bound to find something good to wash down your meal with. We opted for the Portuguese Red Sangria (and we couldn’t stop at just one glass), but we also grabbed the chance to check out some of the signature cocktails, including the coveted Piri-Piri Chocolate Martini ($85) and the refreshing Lychee and Lemongrass Colada ($85). Pick your poison, girls, they’ve got it all!
The food here is killer! And don’t worry if spicy isn’t your thing, there’s enough variation of spice on the menu that even if you’re a mild soul like myself, you’ll leave the restaurant feeling stuffed to the brim. We opted to share a couple of starters to whet our appetites, opting for a little surf ‘n’ turf in the form of Piri-Piri Prawns ($138) and Portobello Mushroom Strips ($68) complete with Piri-Piri Mayo – which definitely needs to be a staple in my kitchen. The Prawns were chargrilled to perfection and the mushroom strips were a highlight, crunchy on the outside and wonderfully juicy.
Obviously, without a doubt the Piri-Piri Chicken was the star of the show. I’d highly recommend grabbing your favourites and opting for the Full Chicken complete with four tasty sides, and at just $360 for an entire spiced bird, can you really go wrong? Eat your fill of tender chicken and sample a variety of side dishes between your group – I can vouch for the Piri coated fries (and coleslaw!), and if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s quite a variety of sauces to pair. We loved that we could play around with flavours and spice levels with every bite, as the portions were more than generous.
With a large crowd? The Frango Chicken & Mushroom Burger ($168) was massive (definitely one for a knife and fork) and for the veggies among you, don’t forget to check out the Flaming Halloumi Fajitas ($138). These were a seriously worthy contender on the menu with heaps scrumptious grilled halloumi and veggies for you to build your own wrap with. We may or may not have eaten most of the haloumi by itself…
Whether you’re a fan of the famed spice or not, Flaming Frango is somewhere you definitely should consider for your next mid-week meal with mates. I’ve never actually been to the ‘famous’ Nandos so I can’t tell you how my experiences stack up, but my friend and I walked rolled away rather pleased! Being so accessible, laden with an overflowing (pardon the pun) drinks menu and extensive food options, the joint has joined my list of reliable, favourite restaurants in Hong Kong. I know I’ll leave with a satisfied belly the ability to breathe spicy fire on my enemies. 10 out of 10, would recommend!
