What Is Crystal Healing?

In short, crystal healing is a type of alternative energy therapy in which gemstones are used to bring balance to mind, body and life.

The belief that crystals can act as our silent protectors and benefit our lives has been around for centuries. While there isn’t a lot of scientific evidence in support of healing crystals, here’s what we do know.

Crystals have the amazing ability to generate electricity under pressure. It’s called the piezoelectric effect. In everything from microphones and radios to computer chips and digital watches, crystals are used to transform energy.

Proponents of crystal healing believe that each type of crystal has its own unique energy field and that these energies are what give the stones their healing properties. A crystal’s energy and vibrational resonance, it is said, has the ability to interact and align with our body’s own energetic vibrations.

As beautiful as these gems look on our Instagram grids, it’s not just their pleasing aesthetic that has skyrocketed the crystal healing trend. The origin, velocity and magnitude of the movement speak to something more – a desire, perhaps, for connection to a higher power that gives us comfort, peace and protection.

How Are Healing Crystals Used?

As you can imagine, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to crystal healing, though all crystal healers will agree on one thing: a session is most effective when intentions are set, and you come into it with an open mind and the desire to heal.

In the most common treatment, crystals are placed on the body, often corresponding to a person’s chakras or energy centres. You may also come across a crystal healing massage, or treatments where crystals are laid out around your body or onto a mat. These are called crystal grids and are said to be a powerful way to surround yourself with healing energy and to manifest a desired goal or intention. While each type of crystal is prescribed specific properties, much of crystal healing comes down to instinct. Many practitioners simply recommend running your hands a couple of inches above the stones and “feeling for” the right one.

Citrine
