There’s no shortage of amazing Japanese restaurants in the city – here’s our take on six of the best wallet-friendly (as well as more extravagant) options.

G/F, Flat C, Yee Fung Buding, 1 Village Road, Happy Valley – 2838 3848
This teeny neighbourhood spot is very popular with the Happy Valley crowd – and you might spot the odd celeb in there as well. With only four tables, we definitely recommend you book in advance. The spicy tuna rolls are to die for.
G/F, 110 –114 Tung Lo Wan Rd, Causeway Bay – 2398 8000
A true hidden gem, Sushi Shin offers exquisite Japanese food – at a price. If money’s not an issue, go for the omakase menu, but if that seems too pricey, lunch offers excellent value for money. Sit at the bar and watch the chefs do their thing…but don’t forget to offer them a glass of sake (it’s only polite!).
G/F Chinachem Leighton Plaza, 29 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay – 3188 0083
Good conveyor belt sushi at a good price in a great location – what more could you want?
G/F, Chong Hing Square, 601 Nathan Road, Mong Kok – 3586 9515
You’ll never be disappointed at Mi-Ne and best of all, this is sushi that won’t break the bank. The long queues at lunch and dinnertime are a testament to Mi-Ne’s enduring popularity.
16/F, Continental Diamond Plaza, 523-527 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay – 2836 0056
Another tiny, authentic Japanese restaurant which gets rave reviews from loyal clientele who go back again and again for the omakase menu. It’s worth getting to know the chefs – expect extra special goodies when you become a regular.
Shop 4, G/F., Midland Court, Caine Road 58-62 – 2331 8110
They do the basic sushi/sashimi combos (salmon, tuna), but go for the sukiyaki and deep fried pork chop on rice…yum!
