Top 5… Delicious Laksa

30 August, 2010
We’ve decided to call this our top five ‘delicious’ rather than ‘authentic’ laksa recommendations as our Singaporean and Malaysian friends tell us it’s near impossible to find really authentic laksa in Hong Kong. But that doesn’t make our top five selection any less yummy in our eyes!

Sabah
Shop 4-5, G/F, Yen Men Building, 98-102 Jaffe Road, Wanchai – 2143 6626
Our Malaysian girlfriend, and her parents, recommend this place for some of the most authentic Malaysian food in HK. It’s definitely not fancy but they also serve a good selection of dishes in addition to laksa – roti and beef rendang are two of our favourites.

Hainan Shao Ye
Shop 311, 3/F, World Centre, 280 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay – 2111 3166
A new kid on the block which we reviewed a few months ago, Hainan Shao Ye’s flavourful soup base made it a winner in our books. It has a great view out on to Causeway Bay harbour too. You must also try their signature Hainan chicken rice!

Prawn Noodle Shop
Shop 4, G/F, Rialto Building, No. 2 Landale Street, Wan Chai – 2520 0268
Our favourite branch near Sheung Wan has closed but we’re such big fans of this store, we’ll make the journey over to Wanchai for our prawn noodle fix. Less laksa, and with more of a curry taste, their spicy base is rich and flavourful. One of our favourite toppings is prawn and sliced meat, which combines melt-in-the-mouth slices of pork with prawn bites.

Malaymama
Shop 11A, Mercer Street, Sheung Wan Sheung Wan – 2542 4113
In the fierce rivalry between Malaymama and Katong Laksa (below), Katong wins…but only just. The only solution we can think of is to try both for yourself and let us know your verdict!

Katong Laksa
Shop D1, G/F, 155 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai – 3168 2478; G/F, No. 8 Ma Sha Street Sheung Wan – 2543 4008
The crowds outside this ever-popular laksa joint are horrendous at lunchtime, a testament (or should that be a taste-a-ment?) to their delicious bowls of steaming goodness. Expect nothing less than slippery noodles, a tasty broth and generous toppings of shredded chicken, tofu and seafood.
