Good luck charms

26 February, 2010

We’ve got our minds on luck this week, as our March Sassy Hour will have a lucky theme! I love the idea of good luck charms – small talismans to ward off the slings and arrows of fortune (to horribly mis-quote Shakespeare) and put a little spring in your step knowing that you are one lucky girl. I remember the day when my great-aunt gave me her charm bracelet – carefully filled with the most beautiful little gold charms, and as I now have a little god-daughter myself, I’m planning on passing on the tradition by getting her the plain bracelet for her christening, and then sending her a new charm for it each year.

For myself, I’m really coveting these beautiful crane necklaces by Max Steiner Design – the gold one in particular. Cranes are considered a mystical and lucky animal in Japanese culture, and it is said that folding 1000 origami cranes can make a person’s dreams come true, which is why before weddings a bride will sometimes fold 1000 paper cranes. The gold necklace is a little out of my price range unfortunately at US$680, but the sterling silver version is a slightly more wallet-friendly US$165… and with all the good luck it will bring me, isn’t that really an investment in my life? At least, that’s what I’ll tell myself!
