Escape to the Maldives!
The Dusit Thani in the Maldives has teased me. During my short stay there, I realised that having a small taste of something good will almost always leave you wanting more. And that my lovely Sassies, is where my current relationship status is with Dusit Thani, Maldives… I want more, more, more!
So how did I end up at the Dusit Thani? Well, the answer is pretty much this: I needed a getaway from HK life and a bit of romance. My husband and I live the typical fast paced Hong Kong lifestyle. We are so busy with work, family and friends, that sometimes we forget to just chill out and spend some quality down time together (outside of watching a marathon session of our latest favourite on Netflix!). We are also that couple who are in a bit of a rut when it comes to romantic getaways. Don’t get me wrong… we have had our share of getaways, but somehow it ends up being with a group of friends or family, which is fun but it leaves little room in the oh-la-la department.
So when the Dusit Thani in the Maldives was introduced to me by the fab team at The Luxe Nomad, we flirted with the idea of a romantic getaway. And let me tell you, one glimpse at the images for this hotel had me packing my bags, booking my ticket and putting my out of office on so I can get my romance on with my man.
It was our first time in the Maldives, so we sampled a few hotels to get a taste of what this spectacular place had to offer. Our first stop was the Dusit Thani and boy, did it set the bar high for what an island getaway should be. We arrived to Male after a direct flight from Hong Kong, landing pretty late in the evening. That meant the seaplanes (which are so cool – definitely try one out if you have the chance!) weren’t running, so we took a short domestic flight followed by a 10-minute speedboat ride to the resort.
We were greeted as soon as we got off the boat and whisked to our amazing Beach Villa. It was literally just steps away from the beach and when we woke up the next morning, we threw on our swimsuits and ran down for a dip in the insanely blue water. After that refreshing start to the day, we headed back for a cup of coffee on our private balcony, ready for a day of full-on activities (we were only there for 2-nights so needed to make the most of it!).
There are many types of rooms at the Dusit Thani and let me tell you, this hotel brand knows how to do things right. In addition to the room we stayed in, they also have standard Beach Villas, Water Villas with Pools, Ocean Villas with Pools (which looked incredible!), and last but not least, Two-Three bedroom residences if you are travelling with family or friends. Just think of all the gorgeous weddings they must have here…

Since we had a short time at the resort we wanted to pack in as much as we possibly could while mixing in some much needed downtime. There are loads of activities, and one of our favourites was just taking our bikes and pedalling around the resort.
The Dusit Thani also has a great Marine Centre, which has you covered when it comes to diving, snorkelling and any water sports activity you can think of. And if you are the type of vacationer who just likes to chill by the pool then you will LOVE the infinity pool, which just so happens to be one of the largest in the Maldives. There is also a gym and daily yoga classes for guests to enjoy – we certainly took advantage! Perfect for rebalancing after our flight from Hong Kong.
And then of course there is the beach… the beautiful beach with the crystal blue water. While Dusit Thani is chock full of activities, there is just something about being on the beach which is good for your soul.
When you visit the Maldives, you pretty much spend all of your time at the resort, so having fab rooms, activities and food should definitely be on your wish-list. It’s important to pick a hotel that can deliver and the Dusit Thani, my friends, most certainly does, as the food does not disappoint.
We started off our mornings with a lovely breakfast buffet at The Market. Set by the beach, The Market has a mix of both East and West cuisines. It seriously set us up for a morning of snorkelling, so I definitely recommend hitting this spot up before venturing off on your day.
Lunch was spent at the Sea Grill, which is steps away from the infinity pool. It’s the perfect spot for a quick bite between dips in the pool and reading the latest beach read on your Kindle (or a physical book if you prefer old school methods of reading!).
For our dinner we enjoyed delicious Thai food from the popular Benjarong, the hotel’s signature Thai restaurant. As we were on an island where food needed to be flown in, our expectations were slightly lower as it can be difficult to get all the same quality ingredients. However, the food at Bejarong was really good and hands down it was the best meal I had during my Maldives stay.
Okay, so talk about a tease. The Devarana Spa at Dusit Thani was the biggest tease for me! As we only had a short time and wanted to take advantage of all the activities and sun, I didn’t get to spend as much time as I would have liked here. I wish I had spared an hour or so for a treatment… there was something about this spa that I just connected to and wanted to experience more of. I fell in love with the white interior of the spa rooms, which were so light and uplifting – a far cry from some of the dark wood that you see in many spas in Hong Kong.
It’s a full service spa and as the hotel group has a fabulous reputation and history, you can bet that they know exactly what they are doing. The spa has six deluxe treatment rooms which, get this, are elevated amongst the hotel’s trees! Without a doubt, the next time I visit the Dusit Thani I won’t be making the same mistake. A 60-minute massage at this relaxation destination will be top of the list…
As for the romance… Dusit Thani is a great getaway for any couple who are looking to spend some much needed quality time together. It was so nice to unplug and enjoy hanging out just the two of us and while I won’t ever confirm to you the actual timeline of things, all I can say is there is a baby on its way for our little family! So rest assured, romance is definitely something the Maldives can deliver (as to whether this baby is a ‘Made in the Maldives baby’… that’s a secret I’ll never tell!).
So Dusit Thani, you teased us with your wonderfulness and I promise, I will be back. Next time though, I will probably have little ones in tow, so you may see me dropping them off at your cool Kids Club before heading off to that massage I have been dreaming about since I visited!
