Desigual is Espanol for different, and this Spanish fashion brand definitely stands out from your usual black and greys!
Coming all the way from the shores of Barcelona, the brand is no stranger to Hong Kong – and if you’re a fan, then someone’s just answered your prayers. Desigual has finally departed from the small corners of department stores here and leapt into a fully-fledged standalone shop in Shatin’s New Town Plaza!
Having known Desigual since I first came across it in Singapore few years back, I’ve always loved their fun clothing and accessories covered in a kaleidoscope of bright colours, patchwork prints and intricate embroidery. Whether it’s a simple bag or an extravagant coat, their designs always bring a pop of energy to your outfit (their style kind of reminds me of Pheobe from Friends!). With celeb fans including model stunner Bar Refaeli and a collaboration line with French couture designer Christian Lacroix, the Zara/TOPSHOP-esque prices for their “out of the ordinary” range of vibrant dresses, patterned handbags and fun shoes come as a very pleasant surprise!
Whether you know the brand or not, you’ll be attracted by the pretty décor and homely atmosphere at the store. With wooden tables and Turkish carpets, the spacious displays give you plenty of room to breathe and browse (a change from the usual crowded corridors and stores in New Town Plaza!)
I hope that with Desigual expanding (we’ve heard they plan on opening more stores here soon), they’ll be bringing more splashes of colour to the streets of Hong Kong – hopefully people will get to know not only the dance or food of Spain, but their amazing fashion as well! On the other hand, let’s not add to the already suffocating weekend crowds over at Shatin… after all, as Desigual themselves say, “La vida es chula” (life is cool)!
