Harem Pants… would you?

22 February, 2010

One of my biggest fashion challenges is that I just don’t like trousers – 99% of all styles are hideously unflattering on me, and I just have no idea how to wear them in terms of what to put them with. I have a similar problem with skirts to be honest – dresses and tops and jeans are pretty much my uniform. This season though, flicking through the fashion magazines, I started to get a strong desire for a pair of loose, silky harem pants… They just look like they would be so cool and comfortable – perfect for the Hong Kong summer, and although the shape is very casual, in the right fabric, they can be dressed both up and down.

This pair of Diane von Furstenberg trousers (is it just a coincidence that the trousers I love are designed by a woman most famous for her dresses?) hit the nail right on the head for me – the colour is a rich tobacco and the cut looks as though it would be kind to those of us who are a little pear-shaped. In my ideal outfit I’d keep the rest of the look simple and neutral with minimal jewellery, only this chic Vionnet brass cuff, pretty Lanvin sandals and a loose tank.

I love these little supermini jackets that are cropping up (no pun intended), and of course, the Alexa bag from Mulberry is a true classic. I’ll definitely be hunting down a low cost pair of these pants in Zara which I noticed is filling up with fun trouser styles.

One area which I just don’t think I’m ready to go though is the printed harem pants look, which for me just reminds me too much of the early 90s. That being said, last season I thought I’d never touch harem pants with a barge pole, and here I am wanting some, so I’ll never say never!
