I met Ulricke, the owner of Forest Bird on Staunton Street, recently and during our conversation she mentioned that she often wears items in her wardrobe that she has had for 8-10 years. I was in awe by that statement because after a few seasons I usually get tired of certain things or I no longer know how to wear them to make them look fresh and modern.
Having this conversation motivated me to pull my black vest (or waistcoat as I have learned from Hester) out from deep within my closet and play with ways that I can give it new life again. You see, I wore this vest during the photo shoot when Sassy was featured in Time Out and I look back at the picture now and don’t really love my outfit (which means it hasn’t seen the light of day since). I really like the idea of the vest but am sort of realizing now that I didn’t add much style into it and didn’t play around with mixing the masculine vest with something feminine.
The way I am going to style it now is a bit different then my jeans and white t-shirt combo of a year ago. I think I will add a bit of girly into the look by pairing the dark vest with pretty dresses and belts. I played dress up the other day and my initial favourite is a combo that includes my black vest paired with a white frilly sundress that I wore the morning of my wedding. This is another item that rarely sees the light of day anymore so I am kind of excited to be able to rework the two pieces together. Another look I am currently liking is taking my red satin dress that I wore to our Sexy Xmas party and pairing it with the vest and a belt for a not so incredibly fancy (or sexy!) look.
Here are a few pics that I used as inspiration for my dress up session. I love how each girl paired her vest with something feminine to create the right balance. I am not entirely girly when it comes to my fashions anyway so this mixture is right on point for me and I can’t wait to debut my newly created looks and let my black vest out of my closet after a year hiatus!
Do you have an item of clothing that just sits in your closet but you know it has potential? If so, what is it and how would you rework it into a fab new outfit?
