Top 4 New(ish!) Bars for June

5 June, 2013

Summer’s creeping upon us and it’s time to find some new hangout spots for the season! It’s been a long while since our last bar roundup in January, so if you haven’t done your homework, we’ve handpicked four of the most recent bars to hit the scene in Hong Kong. From gin galore to pre-game shots, we’ve got you covered for every occasion, so if you love a good drink or two, read on!

G&T Bar

G&T Bar might be the very definition of a hidden gem! Tucked away up a flight of stairs on a street corner, this cosy piece of heaven overlooks ever-bustling Hollywood Road. The name of G&T gives you a hint as to the bar’s specialty – their signature drink is, of course, the all-time British classic gin and tonic – and they’ve got almost 80 different gins on offer to prove it. Take your pick from their “Gin Bible” or choose from a variety of other signature cocktails, mixed drinks, champagnes and spirits; if you’re feeling the need for a nibble, they also serve burgers, tacos and quesadillas that are far from your usual sad-looking peanut mix! With some nostalgic golden tunes and a candle-lit atmosphere, this is the perfect secret spot to wind-down and chill.

Caprice Bar

Is it a bar really a bar if it has its own dedicated cheese room?! An offshoot of their famous Michelin-starred restaurant, Caprice Bar over at the Four Seasons Hong Kong is bringing a whole new definition to stylish elegance when it comes to drinking. With decadent decor (think velvet sofas, leather armchairs, an open fireplace and even a hand-stitched six foot tapestry!) and stunning views of Victoria Harbour, this definitely isn’t your usual hotel lounge. Caprice Bar’s expansive selection of wines includes long-standing favourites and unusual choices hailing all the way from France, with liqueurs, cocktails and champagne also available. Most impressive however is their Comptoir (French for counter) and cheese menu, with the likes of black truffle scrambled eggs, Iberico ham, light desserts and seasonal artisan cheese flown fresh weekly from France (can we say ooh-la-la?). Unique wines by glass or bottle, with a perfect cheese platter pairing in an uber-sophisticated environment? Sound like all the right ingredients for a wonderful night to us!

Origin

If you’ve been to Angel’s Share or Quinary, then you’ll know all about the high standards of owner Charlene Dawes’ latest venture, Origin. With master mixologist Anthonio Lai at the helm once more (shown in the top photo!), what’s unique here are the special culinary methods used to mix drinks (think a rotary evaporator, vacuums and a water-bath – Heston, eat your heart out!), making them a much more exciting proposition than the same old boring cocktails.

Origin’s specialty is gin, with twelve homemade gin infusions on offer, including flavours like lemongrass, basil, orange and grapefruit; the perfect match for a tonic or the key ingredient to a fabulous gin cocktail, we reckon these are the ideal remedy for a hot summer day! If you’re not a huge fan of gin, don’t worry – you can still have your pick of classic cocktails and wine while chilling out to a background of relaxing lounge music.

Geronimo Shot Bar

Pre-game drinks are getting as important as the actual game these days! If the usual beers and wines aren’t hardcore enough for you, then Geronimo should be right up your alley, with 40 different kinds of shots on offer alongside all your usual bar staples. From fruity, milky, layered or downright lethal, these shots can definitely do more damage than their size lets on! With a native-American themed décor, a “Chief Of The Month” challenge (bang on the drum if you dare, and you’ll end up buying the whole bar a round of shots – the chief is the one who buys the most shots that month!) and Ladies Night every Wednesday featuring free-flow bubbly and mimosas, Geronimo may well take you back to your crazy college days. Who says we’re too old to party?!
