It may be summer in Hong Kong but the sun can rarely be counted on for a long-term stay. However, no matter the weather outside, you can make yourself feel as vibrant and cheerful as possible by donning the happiest shade of all…. YELLOW! I have scoured the racks and hand picked only the sunniest hues on offer so get your shades on because things are looking bright!
Fiercely Fiona, Bekka, Need Sunglasses
Let’s start small and build bold! The simplest way to add a dash of dazzle is to dye your digits! I have recently been sporting OPI’s Fiercely Fiona and have received rave reviews. These little pops of color look great with an all black outfit making the transition from safe to sunny super simple! Resident polish nerd Rach also recommends OPI’s Need Sunglasses, a more sunflower yellow, and Zoya’s Bekka, a shimmery neon lemon.
Another easy way to incorporate yellow without looking corny is to do it through your handbag. I have the Happy Bag from Dooney & Bourke and love it! The crossbody style makes it super wearable and the leather is waterproof in case a summer storm does appear!
Clockwise from top left: ASOS, Nine West, Cambridge Satchel, Mulberry Bayswater
Another option is the Laser Cut Clutch by ASOS that would be surely brighten up your evenings! Nine West offers a mini cross-body in a sugar sweet lemon hue as well.
If you have more to carry than the mini can contain, then try the Mulberry Bayswater from Net-A-Porter in this fabulous canary shade! Or if you want classic with a twist, try this sunflower yellow try this sunflower yellow Cambridge Satchel from ASOS; you can also find fluorescent neon yellow ones at shoespace in the new LAB CONCEPT in Admiralty. Zara, Sam Edelman, Zara
Yellow shoes make each step sizzle! You can pair these with gray or navy for a more classic look or you can really go all out and try them with orange or Kelly green for a bold take! Personally, I love the Zara t-strap in electric yellow! If you want to exercise a bit more caution, then try this buttery Zara pump on for size.
Sam Edelman at Shopbop also makes a lovely sling-back with just a touch of colour with a heel height that is perfect for HK streets! There were also flats galore in every colour of the rainbow at Steve Madden’s Spring/Summer 2012 Collection, so they’re certain to have some yellow hues to take your fancy too.
Rag & Bone, Zara, Catherine Malandrino
Feeling bold? Why not go all out! I just picked up this sun-drenched Zipper Blazer at Zara and have been pairing it with everything from jeans to my breezy maxi dresses! You can also add a little light to a dull day with a curry colored blouse like the one here by Rag & Bone from Shopbop. For the weekend, this sunny Catherine Malandrino romper from Shoppbop should make you smile.
This season’s jeans are anything but average so switch your ol’ blues out for something a more garden-fresh like these ones from True Religion. Plus, how gorgeous would these Tibi wide leg trousers from Shopbop be for an afternoon wedding paired with a pale grey silk blouse?! You could even do a barely there pale yellow color on the top, which would lengthen your silhouette. If you are on the shorter side, you can even wear a pair of platforms underneath to really stretch out those stems! Pants like these should be hemmed so that they are just a hair up from skimming the floor.
So there you have it! I have scoured every item under the sun and come back to you with all my top picks and guess what… they were all yellow (come on… you knew a Coldplay reference was due)! I hope we all get the chance to bask in amazing weather this summer but even if the sun takes a holiday at least we can be clad in colour!
