Originally from South Wales, product designer-turned-artist Richard Crosbie has been residing in Hong Kong for over 25 years. First touching down in Kai Tak (back when you’d land between buildings!), he’s always had a keen eye for the city’s street scenes, individual figures and grand views, with his well-executed artwork capturing the feeling and essence of life in Hong Kong all at a reasonable price.

Scroll through the studio’s Facebook page and you’ll find post after post showcasing self-created, hand-drawn and painted artworks that draws inspiration from local icons and our cultural surroundings. While you can always opt for more popular tourist-type scenes and landmarks, you’ll also see artworks of food hawkers, bamboo scaffolders and bustling local neighbourhood street scenes. Some of the most detailed pieces on offer take Crosbie up to 45 hours to complete!

Rainy Day in Causeway Bay, $600

A watercolour painting of a street scene in the busy shopping district of Causeway Bay. Created on the eve of a typhoon passing the city (with the wind howling and rain lashing!), marvel at the colours and reflections on the wet surfaces.

Red Mini Bus, $400

An art print of Crosbie’s original watercolour painting of two Hong Kong icons: a red minibus and the distinctive Yee Wo Bridge as seen from Sugar Street. This piece took about a week to paint, with depictions of the light reflections and refractions in the bus window.

Vertical City, $1,250

A painting showing the view from the top of a city tower in Mid Levels, overlooking Victoria Harbour. This piece took over three weeks to complete, and uses both a “wet on wet” and a “dry on wet” watercolour technique.
