G-Star Raw – denim with an edge

Think your jeans are too safe, too simple, too everyday?! Do you want to go RAW? G-Star Raw is a brand that specializes in unwashed untreated denim wear and they have just opened their flagship HK store, currently their largest in the entire world!

Although the company had been around since 1989, the raw denim wasn’t unleashed until 1996 when head designer, Pierre Morisset, saw a man getting off his motorcycle drenched from riding in the rain. This stranger’s jeans clung to his legs forming interesting shapes and folds around the knees from where the rider had his legs bent while on the bike. The designer saw this scene and decided that this was to be his art inspired by the everyday.

But these are way beyond your everyday jeans! These are the jeans you wear to be noticed, to show that you know and love fashion… and if you need further proof of that, check out our super-stylist That Girl Jasmine wearing them here! G-Star takes its cues from military-inspired garb and has multi-function pieces and pockets hiding within the collection. There is also a full art exhibition on display at the Leighton Centre show showing a million things to do with denim… Who knew a rhinoceros in a vest could be so cute!

There were a few stand-out pieces that would be perfectly wearable on HK streets. My favorites include the Essentials Tailored Blazer, the New Kick Cropped Jeans, the Safari Trench, and the Gonzo Dress.  The Gonzo Dress is an easy throw-on-and-go-run-errands while looking cute and fashionable piece.

Both the blazer and the trench would be perfect over a striped or floral midi sundress to battle the HK air conditioners that will soon be on full blast! (Though I would be careful with the cut of the blazer on a fuller bust as it will only accentuate what you are trying to cover.) And lastly, the jeans… well, those look like something that I would live in on the weekends. Can you say lazy Saturday brunch!? Those jeans would look amazing with a Bloody Mary!

So, if you are looking to revamp your casual wear for something a little tougher, then look no further. G-Star Raw can add edge to your boring old jean routine and rescue you from a denim rut – they certainly make me feel a lot cooler than I really am!
