An Interview with Nina Ricardo, founder of Aftermath

4 November, 2010

We caught up with Nina Ricardo, founder of the dress line Aftermath, to learn a bit more about her retro inspired dresses. We also have 2 Aftermath dresses to giveaway – read below for more information on how to win!

What made you start your own fashion line?
I started Aftermath as a creative escape. After years of working as an advertising creative, for the first time in my career I found myself frustrated in a conservative market. I had two options: continue and hope for a change or put my advertising career on hold and focus my energy and creativity on another of my passions. After all, who says we are destined to be great at only one thing, right?

What inspires you most when creating your collections?
I get most of my inspiration as I browse for fabrics. I guess I am still strongly influenced by my creative process as an art director so prints and patterns are usually my starting point. As soon as I spot something unusual and interesting I start imagining all of its potential.

What is your favourite piece from your collection?
It definitely has to be the Bustier dress. It is romantic, very easy to dress up for winter with a nice cardigan, tights and a belt, but most of all, I am amazed with how flattering this dress is on any body shape.

What type of girl wears an Aftermath piece?
She is as unique as her clothes, therefore she loves the thrill of searching for an extraordinary piece of clothing that no one else will have on the mainstream. Wearing a dress puts a smile in her face, she immediately feels uplifted and ultra feminine. She is romantic but she has a touch of whimsy that transcends in the type of print she chooses to wear every day.

What is your must have fashion essential?
With the fifties wave that we are going through I would have to say cinched belts and lots of them. Especially now that the weather is getting colder the possibilities are endless. I wear them around fitted jackets or cardigans over my vintage inspired dresses. It immediately creates a beautiful hourglass figure on anyone!

Aftermath is available on Etsy or here in Hong Kong at Magnan & Tse (15 Aberdeen Street), Select 18 (18 Bridges Street) and Kapok (16-18 St. Francis Yard, Sun Street).
