Top 5 places to find cheap and cheerful sunglasses in Hong Kong.
Designer sunglasses are the dream… their price tags? Not so much. Thankfully Hong Kong has a wonderful array of budget sunglasses to offer. And rightly so, for summer in HK comes hand in hand with junk boat season. These vessels are definitely not a friend of expensive eyewear, ladies. The little arms of our sunnies get stretched, they’re in constant danger of being stepped on and in the worst case scenario, they’re lost to the ocean forever. Crikey, the thought of taking something so precious near a junk makes me feel a bit teary.
Browsing the high street and the back streets, we have almost too much choice! Oh, the difficulties life throws our way, hey. So here we go, the five best places to spice up your eyes:
1. Forever 21
At the very centre of HK’s affordable high street offerings, it’s Forever 21 in Causeway Bay. Their range of sunglasses is on point this year, with more John Lennon circles and cat eye pieces than you can shake a stick at. Checking in at around $50 apiece, why not treat yourself to a wildcard option too? Throw a spanner in the works with an octagon shaped lens. Because summer is for living, girls.

2. Select 18
Tucked away up on Bridges Street (opposite Oolaa), you would never guess the gorgeous range of sunnies this unassuming shop front is hiding. If you’re keeping costs low, stick to the displays by the door. However, if some cash just happened to fall into your hands on the walk up, take a look behind the counter at the mouth-watering selection of vintage Moschino, House of Holland and Ray-Ban pieces. The price bracket jumps up to $1,000 and more, but the safety of your eyes in the sun is such a worthy investment. And they look so pretty! Love all things vintage? Select 18, Shop A, 18 Bridges Street, Central, Hong Kong, www.facebook.com/pages/Select-18
Topshop is one of the best for combining high end fashion without draining your purse. Super-sizes and thick plastic rims are dominating their displays this year, and for around $200 you can be a proud owner. Topshop have also thrown velvet sunglasses into the mix this summer, so that your eyewear is a treat for the skin as well as the … erm … eyes.

4. Sunnies Studios
If you’re more of a stay-at-home shopper, then Sunnies Studios (available online at Zalora) is the one for you. Save yourself the hassle of trekking around Hong Kong’s sauna-like streets, and click your way to happiness from the safety of your air-conditioned pad. They’re all about the tortoise-shell this season, but if funky patterns aren’t your thing, there are plenty of candy coloured pieces to browse too. Averaging at just $400, you’ll feel like the cat who got the cream. Check out our recent interview with Georgina Wilson, host of Asia’s Next Top Model and founder of Sunnies Studios!
