What to eat at sea!
It’s well and truly junk season! When we’re not dodging puddles and hiding from the black rainstorms and treacherous typhoons, all we want to be doing is cruising on the open water and enjoying the sun, sea and sand. It’s the perfect way to relax and enjoy the best of what Hong Kong has to offer… and really, what other city can you do this in?! If you’ve already devoured our Junk Trip Guide from previous years and booked the boat, then you’ll need to start thinking about all the other little details. Apart from the banana boat, the most important things have got to be the food… and the booze! If you’re fed up of the same old offerings, why not try one of these cool, new junk boat caterers? They’ll add a bit of excitement to your regular junk F&B offerings…
If you’re a regular Sassy reader then you’ll have picked up on the fact that we are BIG fans of the fare at Little Burro (see our full review here). Those margaritas always seem to put a smile on our faces! And now Little Burro is bringing the Mexican love to the sea. Add a bit of fiesta fun to your junk with their awesome food and bevvie deals, which include burritos, chips and guac’, cinnamon chocolate brownies and of course, our favourite margaritas. There also provide Mexican and local beers and wine to There’s a good variety of packages starting from a very reasonable $88 per person, and you can even get 15 drinks each for just $300 per person. Add a bit of spice to your junk day out!
If you’re looking for a classy addition to your junk then look no further than Invisible Kitchen (check them out in our Top Catering Companies roundup). These catering professionals can whip up a gourmet, handpicked hamper that’s sure to sate your appetite as your cruise the South China Sea. For just $195 per person, you can enjoy a range of delicious morsels, an incredible snack buffet and if you really want to up your junk game, you can even have a four-course meal prepared on board by the team of chefs, servers and barmen. Fancy!
The junks we’re used to involve a lot of sunbathing (or burning…), beers and bags of crisps, but if you really want to make your junk trip memorable then why not indulge in a catering package from the newly opened The Walrus?! This awesome oyster bar is sure to bring the cool to any junk outing and is perfect for those who want a real taste of the sea. Packages include deliciously fresh oysters, shucking knives and their signature bottled cocktails to keep the party going! The smaller package starts at $555 and the larger one starts at $4,600 and up (that’s for at least six oysters and numerous packs of bottled cocktails!).

We don’t know about you, but Korean cuisine is one of our favourites! If you want to bring a bit of Kimchee spice to your next junk, then make sure you try out one of our fave new Korean joints to hit the ‘Kong. TaKorea mixes the best of Mexican and Korean food to create funky fusion dishes that are totally tasty (see our drool-worthy Instagram post of their delicious eats here!). These exciting concoctions include Korean Tacos, homemade Kimchee Nachos and Spicy Chicken… we’re hungry just thinking about it! Get us to the Greek! Souvla serve up mouthwatering open-spit meats, fresh salads and delicious dips. Starting at $345 per person, you can feast on a selection of Greek delights including grilled pita bread with any two dips, warmed olives, dolmades (vine leave wraps), mini pita wraps with a range of meats and any two salads. We like the sound of the Cypriot Salata with grain pulses, nuts, honey, cumin and currants… and of course you can end your Greek feast on a sweet note with their scrumptiously sweet Baklava!

Want to keep it simple when it comes to the food on your junk? Hit up the most hipster sandwich shop in town, Sunday’s Grocery, before you set sail. Grab a couple of gourmet sarnies to keep you going, and don’t forget to sneak in a couple of sides like the Korean Fried Chicken and Chickpea Salad too. The Katsu Sando (think Chicken Katsu Meatballs on Milk Bread with Cabbage and Tonkatsu Sauce) is to-die-for, as is the normal Chicken Schnitzel. Make sure you order beforehand so you can guarantee your favourites are available when you pick them up before you board!

Looking for the whole package? Breakaway offers a luxury yacht with everything you could imagine, including delicious homemade food! This summer, Jason Atherton’s trendy tapas bar is offering junk catering from $350 per person, so you’ll be able to munch on your favourite Spanish specials on the sea. Splash out on suckling pig, snack on Pan Con Tomate and tuck into the luxurious Iberico Pork and Foie Gras Burger as you set sail (see 22 Ships menu here). You’ll even get the awesome Executive Chef Nathan Green on-board to prepare your catered feast himself! If you really want to go all out, you can also hire Ham & Sherry’s Bar Manager Ryan Nightingale to whip up some refreshing cocktails… viva la fiesta!

Stone Nullah Tavern
After a couple of beers, there’s nothing that we would want more than the hearty American fare from Stone Nullah Tavern. The junk catering menu at Stone Nullah is the same as the a la carte, so you can literally pick and choose from their kick-ass selection of homemade pastas (which includes arguably the best Mac ‘n’ Cheese in HK), sumptuous sides and enticing appetisers. All the ingredients are fresh and of the highest quality, so this is definitely one to consider if you’re looking for comforting food that everyone will love. P. S. If Mac ‘n’ Cheese ain’t your thing (although why wouldn’t it be?!) and you’re looking for something healthier, they also do Kale with lilies, lemon and chilli and Roasted Local Organic Veggies.

If you’re after Mexican fare, then Cali-Mex is sure to fix your cravings! They offer three different junk catering packages: Malibu $168, Laguna Beach $118 and San Francisco $88 (prices per person). Each package has a range of different foodie options including various combos of burritos, quesadillas and even the Angus steak grilled salad platter. It’s a reasonably priced option that’s sure to go down a treat with your other junk boat party-goers, especially after a drink or two… or three… or four…
