Zen in the heart of Tokyo

21 October, 2010

As the weather finally starts to cool down, we’ve been thinking about where to go to experience the true changing of the seasons. Just a four hour flight away from HK is Tokyo, where temperatures are currently in the low 20s in the day and mid tens at night – a perfectly refreshing breath of fresh air (and good shopping weather!) after a long and sticky Hong Kong summer.

Nestled in a convenient central location in the eternally glamorous capital is Hotel New Otani, a Preferred Hotel and Resort. Split into three different wings, we recommend staying in The Main Wing over The Garden Tower as it has been recently refurbished and offers a good combination of style and space at a reasonable price.

That said, it’s definitely worth splashing out on a room in the Executive House Zen floors of the hotel if you’re planning a relaxing escape in the capital – absolutely gorgeous, plush and with stunning skyline views, they’re about double the price of the The Main rooms but offer the space and amenities of mini-suites…well worth the extra $$$.

Surrounded by a 10-acre Japanese garden dating back to the 16th century, the subway is a short walk away and Shibuya is just two stops by train. Ginza and Roppongi are both easily accessible by taxi or subway. There are, of course, plenty of shops, restaurants and bars near the hotel if you feel like exploring, and don’t forget to take a romantic nighttime stroll through the gardens and pop by the Koi pond, chapel and waterfall on your way back to your room.

Here’s a secret from us to you: if you sign up for the New Otani Club membership, which is complimentary, you can access an entire list of membership benefits and services. Currently, their “NOC Autumn Value Package” is a real bargain. You’ll not only receive special rates with a complimentary full breakfast, but free, in-room internet access.

The Main Quality Room from JPY 21,600 (approx HKD 2,000) per room per night based on two people sharing at an Advanced Rate. Executive House Zen rooms from JPY 44,000 (HKD 4,200) per room per night.
