Window Curtain Inspiration

10 June, 2010

Hester recently wrote about the Bravo tv show “9 by Design” as it has been one of our favourties around here lately. To be fair, I can’t technically say “our favourite” yet as Natalie just started watching it last night so I am very much looking forward to hearing what she thought of it.

One thing that always catches my eye when I am watching the show is the Novograd’s bedroom curtains. They have floor to ceiling panel curtains but instead of using one colour they inject a bit of fun by having 3 different colour’s that blend so very seamlessly together. Purple is one of my favourites so I obviously am very partial to what they chose (different shades of purple and cream) but I think any variation of colour as long as it is not too overpowering would look absolutely amazing. I think the key is to make sure you have some sort of neutral like cream, white or grey intermixed into the combination. I personally think it looks best if you keep the colours in the same family like the Novograd’s did but the grey and orange combo below is a very close second for me and would go wonderfully in my bedroom!

The whole curtain buying process for me when I moved to Hong Kong was so hard. You see, my mom has her own custom window curtain business so pretty much my whole life I have been surrounded by fabric books and hearing words like swags, cascades, vertical blinds, horizontal blinds…blah, blah, blah. You would think then that I would have picked up on some of this knowledge over time but since I had my mommy, the expert, I never thought I would even have to think about it when it came time to dress my windows someday as she would be right by my side. Needless to say, the day that I went curtain shopping here in Hong Kong was one of the days where I really missed my mom the most. It felt as if my security blanket was no longer with me and I had to figure everything out on my own! Luckily I happened to pop into Fabric World located at 132 Queens Road East and ironically the lady that worked there reminded me a bit of my mom – I am sure I was just injecting qualities of my mom onto her to make me feel better though. She sorted me out with some black and white curtains for my living room that I still love to this day so I think my stand in mom did a good job!

I have been back to Fabric World a couple of times and have been very happy but I don’t want to spend tons on an apartment I don’t own. I would love to do a cool curtain in my bedroom as I am currently redecorating so if you have any good custom places that you have had success with (and are on the cheap) pass them my way please!
