What's On HK

WEEKENDER: W Pool Party, Wine Down at Rayne, Crazy About YSL fashion exhibition and more!

25 May, 2012

May has sped by us in a whirl of contemporary art, creative dining, and never-ending shopping events, but we’re not done yet!  Get a taste of summer with these events ideal for a weekend adventure or a fresh night out.

YSL addict
Le French May is carrying on in full force to bring Hong Kong an abundance of culture and style, all in good French taste.  This year’s festival is pulling out all the stops, and its latest event is definitely one for all you fashionistas! Crazy About Yves sees private collector Oliver Chatenet showcasing his inspired collection of vintage YSL threads for us to drool over – check out Yves Saint Laurent’s classic French panache and signature trenches, tuxes, scarves and prints up-close, all with a dose of Chatenet’s cool styling. It’s the perfect way to get inspiration before you pick out a few summer staples (though good luck finding any of this in vintage stores here!) – we’re thinking structure and a pop of colour for June… with a trademark YSL scarf of course! Check out our Facebook Album for a sneak peek.

When: Until 11 June, 9am-8pm
Where: Hong Kong City Hall, Exhibition Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central, Hong Kong
How much: Free!

Wine down
Start the weekend early at Rayne on Wyndham Street for their Wine Down event next Thursday evening – what better way to recover from a stressful week and chill out with a few friends over unlimited wine and a few nibbles from Relish Kitchen?!  Bottles from Rockbare’s Cellar Door, who specialise in wines from Sauvignon Blanc to Shiraz sourced straight from South Australia, will be showcased and you don’t need to be an expert sommelier to quaff a few glasses (just for testing purposes!). Sit back, sip away and feel the tension melt away!

When: 31 May, 7-9pm
Where: Rayne Wine Lounge and Bar, Shop F, G/F Yu Yuet Lai Building, 43-55 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong, 2840 1955
How much: $200

Make a splash
You know summer has officially hit when all we want to do is pull on our resort-wear bought months ago in the dead of winter, head to the nearest poolside alfresco bar and enjoy the hot HK city nights.  W Hong Kong has realised our needs and is kicking off their Summer Series Pool Parties at the Wet Bar this Saturday. Sip an Absolut vodka cocktail poolside to pumping beats from Asia Pacific’s best DJs on the 76th floor, then follow the music and head below to carry on the festivities ‘till the sun comes up at the afterparty in the W’s new Woobar.

When: 26 May, 8pm ‘til late
Where: W Hong Kong, Wet Deck 76/F & Woobar 6/F, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, Hong Kong
How much: Single Shot $300, WIP Zone $850, Table to Rock $5,000; for Single Shot or WIP Zone Tickets, head to www.hkticketing.com, 3128 8288, or for Table to Rock, email [email protected] or call 3717 2783

Feeling hot, hot, hot!
Need to cool down with some sweet treats? Well, we’ve rounded up our top five ice-creams in Hong Kong… plus if you’re feeling slightly more virtuous, our top five fro-yos too! If a nice cooling cocktail is more your style, how about checking out our favourite alfresco bars in the 852 – great views guaranteed! Finally, don’t forget it’s the last week to snag May’s Sassy Deals, and also the last week of our giveaway to win a fabulous hamper stuffed with summer goodies; get your entries in here.

When: Giveaway and most deals end 31 May

Art icons – old and new
Hong Kong has been going crazy for art recently… and we say keep it coming! We’re loving the big names that end up on our doorstep and Pablo Picasso and Annie Leibovitz are just the latest additions to have shows featuring a huge selection of their best work. It’s Leibovitz’s debut show in HK including some of her famous celebrity portraits whilst with 56 Picassos making their way here from Paris’ Musée National Picasso, it’s the most comprehensive exhibition of his work to ever be seen in HK… and probably will be for a long time! Tickets for the latter are selling out fast (best not to just rock up at the Heritage Museum as some sessions are already fully booked) so make sure you don’t miss out.

When: Leibovitz until 17 June, Picasso until 22 July
Where: Leibovitz, Sundaram Tagore Gallery, 57-59 Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong; Picasso, Hong Kong Heritage Museum, 1 Man Lam Road, Sha Tin, Hong Kong
How much: Leibovitz: free; Picasso: $20, www.urbtix.hk, 2111 5999
