What's On HK

WEEKENDER: Olympics party, JUPYEAH swap shop, Touch street dance and more!

10 August, 2012

We know it’s been seriously hot outside, but before you shut yourself up in your room and blast the AC, Sassy’s still got a few good reasons for you to go out this weekend…

We are the champions…. of partying!
You don’t have to be an Olympian to wear a sparkly unitard or celebrate like a champ! LYV is throwing Hong Kong’s one and only Olympics Costume Party, so get your grills on like Lochte or start practising some flag-themed manicures and raise your glass to those talented athletes. There will be competitions and prizes, live music performances, plus all you can drink and scrummy bar snacks too – a night worthy of a gold medal!

When: 10 August, 8-10pm
Where: Coast, Kinwick Centre, 32 Hollywood Road, Central, Hong Kong
How much: $350; RSVP to [email protected] or on www.facebook.com/lyvhk

Swapping mould for gold
We’ve all been guilty of wearing the same old items in our closet over and over while the rest become grub for moths. But what if you could swap your unloved garb for something else? JUPYEAH is having a pop-up swap for you to bring in clothes, accessories, gadgets and just about anything else for some good old-fashioned bartering. While you do your wallet a favour, you can support Bitetone (HK’s independent music platform) who have handpicked some great local musicians to jam on the day. So come on down and get sorting – after all, one girl’s trash is another girl’s treasure!

When: 12 August, 12-6pm
Where: The Gallery, Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity, 135 Junction Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong
How much: Entry fee $60, $30 for full-time students

Olympics fever
Has watching all those toned and trimmed champions got you longing for an athletic bod of your own? If you’re all set to get sporty this summer, how about some personal training sessions at RAW, getting some balletic poise at Flex’s new Xtend Barre classes, taking to the waves with some stand-up paddle-boarding in Stanley or checking out our guide to getting a beach-ready bod? If all that is sounding a bit too much like hard work, maybe investing in some Fitflops for a mini workout whilst you walk (or shop!) or having a splash in our pick of HK’s best swimming pools might satisfy your sporty urges until the closing ceremony instead!

The apple of our eye
If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, then surely incorporating it into every dish would put him out of a job! This must be Grand Central Bar & Grill’s secret motive as they launch their special Apple Menu this summer starring Somersby Apple Cider. You can take your pick from seven creative dishes, including oyster tempura with an apple cider shot, poached salmon steak with apple cider and a scrummy apple sundae – you’ll never look at apples the same way again!

When: Until 31 August
Where: Grand Central Bar & Grill, Shop R001, 3/F & Roof, Civic Square, Elements, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 2736 4888
How much: Between $100-$250 per dish

Stepping off the streets
As the movie epic Step Up tells us, before some of the best dancers reach Julliard, they often perform on the humble stage of the streets. But this summer, you won’t have to go hunting the sticky streets of Hong Kong for some edgy hip hop moves, because Touch by Boy Blue Entertainment is coming to the stage instead! One of London’s best street dance groups, the award-winning BBE are out to electrify your summer with hip moves and hopping beats. You’ll be popping and locking in no time!

When: 10 & 11 August, 7:30pm; 12 August, 3pm
Where: Hong Kong Cultural Centre, 10 Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong
How much: $160 or $220, www.urbtix.hk, 2111 5999
