What's On HK

WEEKENDER: Dragon Boat festival, SLY pop-up shop, get feasting and more!

22 June, 2012

Is it just us or are all the public holidays falling on Saturdays this year?! It’s Tuen Ng this weekend… so whether you plan on getting in on the dragon boat action or just getting up to your usual weekend shennanigans, we’ve got it all!

Get feasting!
It seems that a slew of new restaurants have opened in HK… and we’ve got the lowdown on the lot of them. So whether you fancy an awesome Mexican platter at Brickhouse, a meat feast at Blue Butcher, some tasty tapas at BCN, a super-stylish coffee and cake at The Library Café or some guilt-free goodness as MANA!, check out our reviews and start deciding on your dishes of choice! If you’d rather cook up a storm at home instead, we tried Secret Ingredient’s new OBE Organic Rib-Eye meal and loved it – and even better, you can get 20% off the recipe by entering the code “Secret Sassy” at checkout. There’s no excuse to go hungry this summer, that’s for sure!

When: Secret Ingredient code ends 30 June

It’s dragon boat time!
Tuen Ng… otherwise known as Dragon Boat Festival… is upon us once again!  The dragon boat teams have been hard at work training and whether you’re rowing or simply watching, with over 250 teams competing, Stanley is the place to be this Saturday. Join the crowds on the beach, enjoy plenty of summer refreshments (and some zong zi dumplings!) and cheer along to the pounding of the dragon boat drums. Don’t forget to get the Sassy scoop on why you should think about joining a team for next year, plus deets on how to get there, here; plus Sassy Mama have also done an awesome round-up explaining all the ins and outs of the day here too.

When: 23 June; see full schedule of races here
Where: Stanley Main Beach & Stanley Main Street
How much: Free to watch!

Music to my wine…
As we all know a nice relaxing glass of vino is much appreciated at the end of the week, so why not head to The Central Wine Club to make the most of their Music To My Wine Fridays. So you can party like a princess without breaking the bank, there is a generous 20% off their wine of the month – the Chateau d’Yquem, aka the sweet wine of millionaires… certain to make for a memorable Friday night! This Friday is extra special as you can catch the wonderful Agatha Kong perform her beautiful blend of acoustic pop and jazz numbers to ease you into the weekend with style.

When: 22 June, 10pm-2am
Where: 3/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong
How much: Free entry but seats are limited; email [email protected] in advance for table bookings

Ciao bella!
As June is the national month of Italy, we think it’d be rude not to indulge in some delizioso Italian cuisine… and luckily for us, the DiVino group have made it extra easy with special menus to honour the Italian food festival A Tarola! At Goccia, it’s an un-missable Campania-inspired menu (we’re eyeing the burrata ravioli and spicy baby octopus soup); DiVino is going all Venetian with a sophisticated choice of delicious dishes (including traditional Venice lagoon fish Carnaroli risotto) whilst Spasso has prepared a rustic menu inspired by the Apulia countryside. It would be a crime to not explore these gastronomical menus… so hurry up and get ordering!

When: Until 30 June
Where: Goccia, Shop 2, 73 Wyndham Street, Central, 2167 8181; DiVino, 73 Wyndham Street, Central, 2167 8883; Spasso, Shop 403, Level 4, Ocean Centre, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, 2730 8027
How much: Menus start from $498 per person (plus 10% service charge)

A touch of Japan
Don’t you worry Sassy shoppers we haven’t forgotten you! SLY has brought the latest Shibuya (Japanese fashion) to Central in the shape of a cool pop-up shop collaboration with Japanese photographer Mika Ninagawa. Tote bags, t-shirts, dresses, make-up pouches and all sorts of other stylish bits and pieces have been created using Ninagawa’s stunning prints – look out for the gorgeous maxi dresses! If you spend over $2000, you’ll also receive a cute hoodie and shorts set and you can also get 10% if you show them this… so what are you waiting for?!

When: Until July 8, 10:30am-8:30pm
Where: G/F, 56-58 Wellington Street, Central, Hong Kong
