Ward off the Evil Eye

7 July, 2010

When I had just graduated from uni, I went to work as a tutor for a Greek family, where I first saw and learned about evil eye jewellery (an idea that’s also common in Turkish culture). The idea is that by wearing a protective talisman decorated with a blue and white image of an eye, you can guard against the envy of others who might not wish you so well in life! Since first seeing the traditional talismans, I’ve been kind of fascinated with the whole concept, but never found the usual evil eye jewellery itself very appealing. Now that I’ve seen this evil eye cuff by Kara Ross though I’m totally won over, and seriously in lust… See, how can you argue with the logic that as well as being an investment in fashion, it would also protect me from harm?

Other items in the collection include a pendant…

and a ring…

But these items don’t inspire the same “have-to-have-it” feeling inside. For me, it’s all about the cuff.

What do you think? Do you have any lucky charms that protect you from the evil eye of others? Do you think it’s just silliness? Or justified only if there’s a fashion motive behind it?!
