Wafffle! – authentic Belgian waffles in Central

It’s pretty hard to find good waffles in Hong Kong – but on our usual wanderings around Central and Sheung Wan, we discovered a brand new store with a banging sign and an amazing smell of Belgian waffles wafting out of its doors!

Located just off Hollywood Road down Graham Street, Wafffle! (yes, with three fs and an exclamation mark) is hard to miss thanks to its eye-catching, comic book-style colourful signage. The inside is equally colourful, with flashing ceiling lamps, a few bar seats and walls scribbled with customer comments (promisingly all good!), but it’s quite a compact space designed more for a quick stand-up snack or coffee-to-go. Greeted with the delicious smell of cinnamon and waffles in the making, I was ready to order!

There are normally three kinds of waffles in store – the Classic (the traditional LiΓ¨ge waffle), the Wafffle! Devil (a waffle filled with Belgian chocolate), and a weekly special, which was apple and cinnamon on my visit (totally explaining the heavenly smell!).

You can either eat these waffles on their own, or add more toppings if you wish – and there’s a massive array to pick from, including whipped cream, fresh fruit, chocolate chips, Belgian speculoos biscuits and plenty more! For the decidophobes out there, you can opt for Wafffle’s ready-made combos, like Belgium Goodies (cookie crumbs, crispy bits and whipped cream), Black and White (vanilla ice cream, crispy bits and chocolate sauce) or Fruit Addict (fresh fruits, whipped cream and syrup).

I went for the Wafffle! Devil, while my friend tried the Fruit Addict. Both waffles were made-to-order and were hot and golden when served. Wafffle’s ingredients – and indeed their waffle grills – have been flown in directly from Belgium to really try and get that authentic waffle taste and texture.

True to real Belgian waffles, these golden goodies were crispy on the outside and slightly dense and chewy on the inside. Mine came oozing with a soft chocolate filling and topped with whipped cream, so this is one snack that really fills your stomach – you definitely need to bring your appetite! My friend’s Fruit Addict was topped with refreshing fruits that nicely balanced out the whipped cream and waffle batter, making this a good choice for (crazy!) people who aren’t super into chocolate.

If you only have time for a drink, Wafffle’s coffee from Brussels or their hot chocolate (made from pure Belgian chocolate and milk) is also a good choice! There are also ice-cold coffees and fruit slushies available too.

Wafffle! is definitely a great place for a midday break from the sun, a cheeky take-away snack or a dessert stop-off after dinner. Given the limited seating, we may have to hold off on our hour-long coffee catch-up sessions but the waffles are totally worth it!
