Vogue Italia’s August Issue features a 24 page spread of photos inspired by the Gulf Oil Spill; Water & Oil. Photographer Steven Meisel captured images of model Kristen McMenamy in feathered and netted couture gowns while laying dirty over jagged rocks covered in sleek oil and mucky water. The photos depict the harsh new reality of the animals and environment left behind by BP’s infamous oil spill.
These images have stirred up loads of controversy as some say the photos are insensitive while others praise the work for bringing awareness to the dreadful situation. I personally find this artistic interpretation of the Gulf Oil Spill to be extremely thought provoking as the images of McMenamy washed up on the beach really do make a statement. What are your thoughts?
