Two stunning properties in a magical destination…

When you think of Sri Lanka, tea plantations, elephants and beaches come to mind. Our trip involved all of these elements and more, and we left with fond memories after feeling truly cared for by Amanresorts.

We first stayed at the Amangalla, located in the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site, Galle Fort, 100km south of Colombo. The hotel building is filled with history, with many iconic events taking place on the premises; luckily the team has still managed to retain an old world charm whilst offering all the luxuries of the 21st century. As soon as we first got out of our car and entered the hotel, we knew we were in the right hands. Every little detail or need that may not even crossed your mind is met here. We were taken straight to our rooms and were served scrumptious scones and jam while we were checked in.

Each room has been carefully designed to include a bathtub, which have been there since the hotel was known as the Oriental Hotel in 1863. You’ll the fluffiest and most comfortable beds and once you open your windows, you’re taken back in time as you watch the world go by on the streets below. There are loads of old streets filled with shops, restaurants and spice markets in Galle, and after a few hours of walking around the town you can even enjoy a serene experience at the Aman spa, with hydrotherapy suites, bath amenities, and a list of massage options to destress all the knots.

sri lankan cuisine

We had dinner at the XXrestaurant and enjoyed a traditional Sri Lankan curry meal comprising of seven vegetables and lentils, unlimited portions of rice and all the other condiments. If this wasn’t a perfect recipe for a happy tummy and a great night’s sleep, the pillows on the bed took care of everything else!

My favourite part of the stay was the freedom to enjoy breakfast at anytime, anywhere in the hotel. We loved being able to sit in the cabanas by the calm pool side and take a quick dip in between our Srilankan omelettes. You’re on Sri Lankan time here, and away from Hong Kong you really learn to enjoy a more relaxed pace of life.

After two nights at the wonderful Amangalla, we headed to the beach village of Tangalle and stayed at the sister property, Amanwella. The property is a stunning – a contemporary beach resort that can guarantee the best digital postcard images for your Instragram likes!

amanwella suite sri lanka

All the suites are inspired by Sri Lankan’s famous architect – Geoffrey Bawa – and each suites has an individual plunge pool and a balcony with a direct view of the ocean. On either side you can enjoy the perfect sea breeze, leaving you with permanent sea salt kissed hair. Keeping in mind that no request is too outrageous for the Aman team, you’re allowed to have your breakfast, meals and spa treatments anywhere that you would like. After a day in the ocean, getting a massage in the comforts of your own room is a divine experience…

sunset on the beach

The hotel has a library full of great reads and snacks that is the perfect resting point in between the day or before a swim in their 47 metre infinity swimming pool facing the coconut groove and is the place to be enjoying cocktails to take in the famous Sri Lankan sunsets. What’s more, the restaurant has a comprehensive menu of Asian and Mediterranean favorites and you can even choose to enjoy a meal at the Beach Club ocean side and under the stars with a fresh seafood menu and some local BBQ favourites. We definitely ended our stay with Amanresorts only wanting to come back for more and feeling peaceful as they guarantee with the name Aman (which means peace in Sanskrit).
