The closest we’ve found to the fish and chips we loved going to university in the north of England – a giant piece of fish in crispy, inflated batter with fat chips. We like ours doused with vinegar, lemon juice and ketchup. No mushy peas unfortunately, but the tartar sauce is amazing.

Super posh black cod fish and chips – a silky smooth fillet of black cod encased in a crisp batter. The view from Costa, which is the sister restaurant to the more well-known Isola, is just as good. A lovely place for brunch – and if fish and chips don’t take your fancy, the seafood stew is absolutely divine. Mop up the juices with plenty of fresh bread.

The new kid on the block, Limehouse looks like it has been dropped from Cornwall into Ship Street. The interiors are traditional, with dark wooden furniture and cream walls – a great place for a date or an intimate gathering with friends. A menu of traditional favourites includes shepherd’s pie, steak and chicken and the fish and chips actually feature as a dinky starter. Any meal where we can start with fish and chips is a winner in our book.
