Top 5 Fish and Chips

21 January, 2011
While the weather’s still a bit chilly, we’re feasting on comfort food to warm us up. Concierge service Quintessentially recommends five of the best places to get your fish and chips fix in Hong Kong.

The Pawn 2-3/F, 62 Johnston Road, Wan Chai
2866 3444

The closest we’ve found to the fish and chips we loved going to university in the north of England – a giant piece of fish in crispy, inflated batter with fat chips. We like ours doused with vinegar, lemon juice and ketchup. No mushy peas unfortunately, but the tartar sauce is amazing.

Café Costa Shop 3025-3026 / 3031-3070, 3/F, IFC Mall,No.1 Harbour View Street , Central
2118 7600 www.ifc.com.hk/en/mall/detail.jsp?id=192

Super posh black cod fish and chips – a silky smooth fillet of black cod encased in a crisp batter. The view from Costa, which is the sister restaurant to the more well-known Isola, is just as good. A lovely place for brunch – and if fish and chips don’t take your fancy, the seafood stew is absolutely divine. Mop up the juices with plenty of fresh bread.

Limehouse G/F, 35 Ship Street, Wan Chai
2528 5818

The new kid on the block, Limehouse looks like it has been dropped from Cornwall into Ship Street. The interiors are traditional, with dark wooden furniture and cream walls – a great place for a date or an intimate gathering with friends. A menu of traditional favourites includes shepherd’s pie, steak and chicken and the fish and chips actually feature as a dinky starter. Any meal where we can start with fish and chips is a winner in our book.

Pickled Pelican G/F, 43 Wyndham Street, Central
2868 6026

Pickled Pelican G/F, 1/F & 2/F, Stanley & The Osa At Shop Front, Stanley Beach Villa, 90 Stanley Main St, Stanley
2813 4313

A modern interpretation of your classic British pub, the grub is pretty good at Pickled Pelican. Both locations offer amazing people-watching opportunities.

Spiaggia G/F, 92B Stanley Main Street, Stanley
2813 7778

Along the tourist trap that’s Stanley Main Street, Spiaggia stands out for its yummy Italian food and eclectic international menu of favourites including fish and chips. Say hello to owner Rudi for us!

  1. The Chippy’s atmosphere is authentic and I love their chips and deep friend Mars bar, but last time I went, the cod was not so good! I agree with The Pawn being on here – really good.

I’d also recommend The Globe in Central, which also has a homely British atmosphere, and the fish and chips at 798 in Times Square are pretty decent as well. Dickens in The Excelsior in CWB is also above average and I’ve heard good things about The Chinnery at Mandarin Oriental. Either way, they have to be better than The Pickled Pelican…

  2. Although a bit on the pricey side (well it is Central) Alfie’s fish and chips are sensational, the freeze dried white balsamic vinegar just knocks your socks off. Suzie Wong actually gave them an A which she hardly ever does!! You would have thought Quintessentially would be a little more thorough in their research.

  3. I grew up in a fish and chips village back home in Canada. Fish and Chips should come with ketchup /mayonnaise for wedge or fat fries. Malt Vinegar and Lemon for the beer battered cod or halibut on top of a wax newspaper print-design paper liner. Yum Yum Yum.
