Summer in the City

20 April, 2011
I remember my first taste of summer in Hong Kong 8 years ago: heat radiating from every built surface and stale air trapped by tall buildings. Despite having lived in equatorial Malaysia for the most part of my life, summer in Hong Kong was unbearable. This time, however, I am determined to adapt as best I can; armed with a wardrobe of silk tops and dresses, lightweight cotton and heat-appropriate makeup. These are my go-to products for summer in the city – I’d love to hear what yours are!

1. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF20
This gives light coverage with a healthy glow; remember no one wants to look like they have makeup plastered on, especially not when you run the risk of having your face slide off in the heat.

2. Coral or bright pink blush
I’ve picked up Torrid by Nars for this summer – the pigment is an intense, warm coral-pink with just the right amount of shimmer. A sheer layer for day gives a natural, sun-kissed look but I love a stronger pop of colour at night and its staying power.

3. MAC Strobe Cream
I love love love this product. I use it at the top of my cheekbones, along my Cupid’s bow and down the centre of my nose bridge. It should be used sparingly though; there is a fine line between glowing and looking like an oil slick/environmental hazard.

4. Dior Bronze Matte Sunshine Powder SPF 20
The unsung hero in my makeup bag: great for dusting under cheekbones and at the side of temples for a sculpted look. The matte finish creates a great contrast when used with the strobe cream.

5. Urban Decay eyeshadow primer potion
I put this to the test two weeks ago when I visited Singapore for work, which was sweltering at around 30 degrees. I applied it in the morning to hold my eyeshadow and eyeliner in place. After a full day of meetings and site visits (from 8.30am to 11pm) my eye makeup stayed put with nary a smudge. So there you have it: empirical proof.
